Shooting Sterr's!
By TMX Archives on 28th Jun 11
Round four was the mid-point in this years BYMX Series held at Dean Moor and hosted by the very capable West Cumbria club.
Following a weekend of thrills and spills it also proved to be fairly pivotal in the Championship stakes with the balance of power eventually tipping even further towards Alexander Brown, Conrad Mewse, Liam Knight and Nathan Watson.
All four guys now enjoy healthy section leads – but the most impressive presents dished out on Father's Day came from the hands of Brad Todd in the Big-wheels and ‘Man of the Meeting' Adam Sterry in the Youth Open class.
It's well-known in Youth MX circles that Adam Sterry goes well around Dean Moor – but no-one really expected the 14-year-old rookie to grab three clear cut heat wins plus the overall victory to become the youngest ever Youth Open class winner at BYMX.
That's exactly what the rising EVO Tech Honda star did however in both confident and sensational fashion as he eclipsed Mel Pocock's 2007 achievements.
Ultimately, Sterry went home with a 1-4-3-1-1 card and the scalps of heat two winner Jamie McCanney plus that of race three victor Nathan Watson. The full story of the weekend also included a mechanical failure for Watson in heat one and ill fortune yet again for Ryan Houghton. Houghton's weekend started well enough with second place in both of the opening two heats but a time consuming fall when leading race three and then a broken gearbox in race four just about capped a miserable run.
Take nothing away from Sterry, however – his win was all about his dominance and his coming of age in a section where he now moves into third place behind Watson and McCanney.
Elsewhere in the division Scott Hamilton on the Relentless Suzuki won the battle of the rest to claim fourth overall – highlighted by his third place finish first time out. Mark Perfect plugged away stoically for fifth and Jake Millward was equally determined weekend long as he finished in sixth. Damon Brooks also shone at various times over the two day piece with ninth overall a cruel reward for his fast gating efforts.
Without doubt the award for the most entertaining racing division of the weekend has to go to the guys and gals of the Big-wheel section.
Ben Watson was riding as a Championship non-points scorer but ultimately his showcase display absolutely underlined just why he is considered amongst the very best in Europe. Coming from the back on each occasion - Ben totalled with four stunning race wins.
In heat five however the HM Plant Red Bull express didn't quite have enough steam to reel in the sensational race winner Brad Todd or second placed Liam Knight. Over the full course of the weekend only Todd and Knight managed to give Watson any real grief as they both held him at bay quite extensively in races one, two and four before ultimately having to succumb.
The battle for the overall championship win quite obviously lay between Todd and series leader Knight, but it swung Todd's way with his devastating Sunday winning brace. Excluding the Watson factor, Todd finished with a 2-1-6-1-1 card as opposed to Knight's 1-2-5-3-2.
Jack Gardiner took third overall with a super consistent card containing four fourths and one fifth. John Adamson and Jason Meara both rode the wheels off their KTMs to grab fourth and fifth overall respectively with Adamson highly impressive in race four when he finished in second place. Also highly impressive Josh Gilbert on the Albion KTM as he claimed the race three maximum points haul with a terrific little show.
