Basin weekend the big winners were Tony Cairoli and Valentin Guillod but the enthusiastic home crowd, significantly larger than in previous years, got its full share of domestic pride!

Max Anstie and Shaun Simpson each led the world in style for several laps, Adam Sterry regained the EMX2 red plate with a win, defending champion Steven Clarke completed a 1-2 on the day, Jack Bintcliffe took a Sunday morning race win in the 150s and Conrad Mewse had 125 honours snatched from his grasp on a technicality.

Those who feared the absence of Villopoto, Searle, Ferrandis and several more would dim the attraction of the British GP were put firmly in their place as a series of enthralling races kept fans trackside throughout two days of furious action.

Main talking point before the GP action started with MX2 was the fitness of Jeffrey Herlings as he lost qualification for the first time all year in the wake of his big get-off at Talavera a fortnight earlier.

"I haven't been able to train and am still in pain,” he admitted before racing and his discomfort was confirmed in the early laps of the opening moto as Anstie and Guillod opened up a 10-second lead.

The Spanish GP winner had sprinted ahead off the start but Anstie attacked, snatched the lead in less than half-a-lap and extended his advantage as he leapt the big uphill quad time and again.

"My starts are still not good enough and the power we have found is still a little too aggressive for my liking,” said Anstie.

"But I managed to ride around them all at turn one and the noise of the home crowd was incredible.”

The home support was also a factor in his downfall.

"I've never led in front of my home crowd for so long and I started to tighten up mid-race,” he admitted.

"We had a good battle with Valentin and we never actually touched but we were costing each other time and that allowed Jeffrey to catch up.”
