Champ marches on as Billy Bolt stars at Scarborough

IT has been a hectic month for riders chasing points in the RT Keedwell-sponsored British Trials Championship.

Following the Scottish Six Days the first week in May riders had to burn the midnight oil fettling bikes and bodies for the St David's BTC round and then more of  the same for round six last Sunday.

This time it was The Scarborough Trial, organised by the local club at their own venue, Low North Park, Harwood Dale, north of the seaside town.

It is a couple of years since the series has visited the  venue and there was a good turnout of spectators.

The Championship class has lost a little sparkle this season following the injury problems for Michael Brown and Spanish challenger Jorge Casales.

And with Dan Peace and Ricky Wiggins both out it is to be hoped they all return to fitness soon.

It does however give others the chance to come through and this they did with Ossa-mounted teenager Billy Bolt having his best ever ride in the series and nailing his first adult championship podium.

There were the usual 12 sections to be lapped three times and after nine subs reigning champion James Dabill was already on nine marks lost.

This included a slack five on section three, a mistake he most certainly would not repeat.

By comparison, 17-year-old  Billy Bolt was on just two so was a real surprise result in store?

The answer was ‘no', not this time anyway as young Billy could not quite maintain the required level of consistency.

Dabill finished the opening lap on 11 with Ross Danby matching that score and Bolt on 12.

James is relentless though – just as you'd expect from him – and by posting another single-figure score on lap two it was looking good for the Vertigo rider.

Ross Danby was having a great ride on his Jotagas and was just behind Dibs while Andy Chilton made the third best score of the lap, looking confident and this was reflected in his riding.

As the trial hit the third and final lap nobody was going to catch Dabill as once again he finished so strongly with a perfect lap for zero. There was not even a hint of a problem at the troublesome 11th sub, a steep climb out of the river which had taken heavy marks from the class all day.
