Britain's got Multi talent
By TMX Archives on 28th May 09

BRAD Anderson on his PAR Homes Honda got his head down and charged to two aggressive wins in last weekend's British MMX Championship and in doing so tamed the hot, dusty and rocky Asham Woods track at Leighton, just outside Frome in Somerset.
While Anderson did his thing in the Open class, Shane Carless on his Moto One KTM came out on top of a very competitive Under 21 class, as Paul Holmes on his Team KTM took an exciting Quad overall the previous day while once again Natalie Kane on her MVR-D Suzuki took the DDB British Ladies class by storm.
Despite putting tons of earth on the hilly track, the racing soon pushed that to one side and out came the rocks and dust again on Sunday, but with alterations to some of the corners and some handy early morning rain combined with some watering, Monday's race was a little better.
Anderson got the holeshot at the start of the first Open class race with the on-form Alex Snow as Lloyd Vercuil picked up his KTM in turn one. But as the riders came up from the valley for the first time, Carl Nunn was all over Anderson's case with both riders clashing on many of the corners till Nunn was pushed over the berm, dropping four or five places.
At the halfway stage, Kristian Whatley was on a charge from, by his standards, an average start, and was doing all he could to close the gap on leader Anderson. Anderson kept control of the race and crossed the finish line just under nine seconds clear of Whatley, with Martin Barr third, with Nunn making a late charge fourth.
Once again it was Anderson that hit the front in race two as again, Vercuil went down in the first turn, but this time he took James Watts and Brian Hartland with him as David Willet, after hitting the start gate, went round them to chase after the rest of the pack. Scott Columb was giving Anderson a hard time round the opening lap, but by the time the second race was over Anderson was clear and in control. On lap four, Jack Hawes drove his Suzuki into the paddock with what looked like a rear flat, as Neville Bradshaw made a pit stop on his DB Racing Honda for some new goggles.
By the time the race clock reached half-distance, Whatley had caught and passed Columb for second place at the expense of Snow and Jamie Law. Once again, Whatley did all he could to catch Anderson but had to settle for second, with Columb hanging on to third as Nunn came from tenth on lap one to take fourth place.
After the race, overall winner Anderson said, "It was a hard track to get dialled into with all the rocks and that, but after I settled down and managed to get two wins, so that's not too bad. In race one Carl (Nunn) pushed me out on one turn so I pushed back on the next, its all give and take in this game, if you give it out you must expect it back!”
Second overall Whatley said, "I got a terrible start in race one, but had a great lap after that, overtaking so many people, then it was just a matter of keeping my head down and pushing on finishing second in the end so that's good. Another bad start in race two, about twelfth, but like race one I just kept pushing on and got another useful second”
Carless was the man to beat in the Under 21s as he got the holeshot in the first race, with Matt Burrows chasing after him round the opening lap. But by the end of the first lap Graeme Irwin on his KTM was in his wheel track and the stage was set for a race-long battle for the lead with neither of the young riders giving or taking an inch as they crossed the finish line just three seconds apart.
Behind the leading pair James Dodd was caught and passed by Josh Waterman as Joe Dark, on his Meredith Suzuki crashed out of fourth, went back to 19th, and fought his way back up to sixth at the flag.
Series leader Scott Elderfield just didn't get going on a track he openly says he doesn't like as he ended the first race in 11th place.
Once again Carless got his second holeshot of the day in race two but this time Dodd was in his wheel tracks, but as the race reached lap four, Carless already had a ten second lead as Irwin, Dark, Waterman and Elderfield all fought over second in one of the closest races of this year.
Carless, with the noisy support of a crowd from the ‘valleys' took his second win of the day from Irwin and Waterman with Alan Keet making a late charge for fourth, as Dark slipped back to sixth, one place behind Elderfield.
An eventful day for Carless as he said, "I struggled for the couple of laps in race one till halfway, but when the gear lever fell off and I was stuck in third gear for the rest of the race. I was using the clutch a lot more and was thinking that it would burn out but it held on. In race two I got the holeshot of the re-started race and managed to open up a nice gap till the end of the race.
