Brown takes number seven

WHEN the original final round of the Maxxis British Sidecar-cross Championship was cancelled three weeks ago, it looked as though the series had come to a premature end back at the beginning of July. Reigning Champions Stuart Brown and Luke Peters held a commanding lead at that point, only three points off a maximum score. With double points on offer at the final round there were, however, four teams still in the hunt Brown, John Lyne/ Steve Kirwin, Andy and Tim Breacher and Daniel and Joe Millard, all of whom would dearly love to win the title. It looked likely to be a damp squib' ending to an exciting season.

Championship coordinator, Paul Pelling, refused to take it lying down and immediately set about finding an alternative venue. Not an easy task, especially in mid-September. The Norwich Viking club had a meeting scheduled for Sunday, so Paul approached them and the deal was done.

Sidecars have not run at Cadders Hill for 20 years, so it was something new for riders and spectators alike, most of whom thoroughly enjoyed it.

Brown shot off the line ahead of Millard and Breacher in leg one with Lyne seventh. Millard stayed in touch in the opening stages but no-one else could live with the pace. By half-distance Breacher was under pressure from Topp, allowing the following group, including Lyne, to close up. Three laps later Topp was third, but Breacher was still fighting and Lyne was coming through the field.

Brown won the race and, in the process, the 2009 British Sidecar-cross title – his seventh title and passenger Peters' fifth. The Millards' second place improved their points tally and Topp was delighted with third. Breacher and Lyne had to settle for fourth and fifth respectively.
