Cab pulls rank

THE 2012 FIM World Trials Championship moved to the tiny Principality of Andorra, nestling in the mountainsbetween Spain and France and the trial, staged on the mountain above the town of St Julia, was run over two days in extremely hot, dry conditions.
On the opening day it was very much business as usual, with Toni Bou picking up his eighth consecutive win.
But on the second day of competition the impossible happened and Toni slipped off the podium, when two fives dropping him to an unheard of fourth place.
The event was staged over a very compact area, with the vast majority of sections in the woods within 400 metres of the St Julia Gun Club, with sections being very dry, rocky and dusty.
And that was how they stayed, with temperatures nearing 30 degrees. Two laps of 15 sections were awaiting all groups in what was, by Championship standards, a relatively easy event.
Jeroni Fajardi continues to be the most improved rider of the year since his return to Beta .
And he was first to show on Saturday, completing his first lap for just six marks, four better than Bou – who dropped two fives – and his Repsol Montesa team-mate Takahisa Fujinami.
Bou obviously learnt from his mistakes though and was totally brilliant on his second circuit, dropping just a solitary mark in the fourth hazard where he failed first time through.
Only Fajardo cleaned this section, taking his Beta through feet-up on his second lap.
Fuji made it through for two and everyone else clocked-up a maximum.
This gave Bou his eighth win on the bounce, with Jeroni a safe second and Fujigas another welcome podium place.
Adam Raga's indifferent form continued while the usually consistent Cabestany was down in fifth. James Dabill, Michael Brown and Jack Challoner followed in quick succession, with Alexz Wigg in contention in 11th, ahead of Ossa's Dani Oliveras.
On the second day there was an upset though as Cabestany found his form and a pair of excellent laps of four and six marks took him into first place and his first victory of the current campaign, ahead of Fajardo, who did little wrong on his way to another runner-up berth.
Bou started out like he was going to romp to yet another 20-point score with just two singles to his name first-time through.
But a five-mark penalty for touching a flag closed things up. Then, when tied for the lead with Cabestany, the Repsol Montesa man dropped another maximum at the penultimate section and that was enough to tip him off the podium.
Raga just squeezed into the top three, one mark ahead of Bou while Dibs and Browny battled amongst themselves for sixth and seventh.
In the Juniors there were celebrations as – after finishing first on Saturday and fifth on Sunday – French Sherco ace Alexandre Ferrer was crowned champion.
