Calvert enjoys Holme Brew'

KENDAL Classic MCC got its Nostalgia Weekend of off-road competition away to a cracking start with the Nostalgia Trial, sponsored by the Coniston Brewing Co with their equally cracking Bluebird beer! The trial took place on Saturday at Holme Farm, Middleton, near Sedbergh, Cumbria, the day before the Nostalgia Scramble at the same venue and once again there was a huge entry of 200 riders made-up of Pre-65 and Twin-shock machines who were provided with two routes, Hard and Easy, through each of the 15 sections. There was a new course and many new sections this year as part of the old course was not allowed due to environmental reasons but new sections in streams and gullies in amongst trees made up the defecit - and were not quite as hard as the sections lost down by the river!
It was a new course but the results had a familiar look with the overall Pre-65 winner being Tony Calvert on his Tiger Cub. After a clean lap Tony was mortified to drop a soft dab just through the Begins cards at the third section second time through. Other riders to win their classes both last year and this were Colin Bailey in the Twins and Alan Whitton in British Specials.
In order to try and avoid too much queueing on a short course with just 15 sections and 200 riders, competitors were sent off to four different starting points and the idea worked well with queueing kept to a minimum. All the classes were tightly fought over with John Maxfield and Dave Thorpe pushing Calvert home. Thorpey matched Tony's clean lap on his second effort while Norfolk rider Chris Collins rode to a surprise clean on the opening circuit but sadly could not maintain that standard and dropped to eighth overall on 13.
