The 2025 MXGP of Flanders once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most physically demanding and unpredictable events on the calendar but it was Belgian sensation Lucas Coenen who emerged victorious at Lommel, taking his first-ever home GP win in front of a roaring crowd.

After a weekend of wildly changeable weather, Grand Prix Sunday delivered perfect conditions for racing at the iconic sand circuit. The 15th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship brought brutal racing, dramatic twists, and standout performances in both classes.

In MXGP, Lucas Coenen delivered a landmark performance, fighting back from a fierce first race defeat to Romain Febvre to take a decisive second moto win. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star became the first Belgian to win on home soil since 2016 and now holds the most GP wins of any rider this season. Although both he and Kawasaki Racing Team's Febvre ended the day level on points, Coenen’s race two win handed him the overall, cutting the Frenchman’s title lead to just nine points.

Calvin Vlaanderen secured a brilliant third overall for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, capitalising on a strong ride through the field in both motos to take his second podium in three rounds. Behind them, factory riders Glenn Coldenhoff, Andrea Bonacorsi, and the returning Jeffrey Herlings - who stunned everyone with the Fox Holeshot in race two - showed flashes of brilliance, though Herlings’ multiple crashes dashed hopes of a podium in his comeback GP.

Race one saw a dramatic clash between Febvre and Coenen, with the Frenchman muscling his way back into the lead after being passed over the infamous wall jump. Coenen’s massive moment in the closing stages handed Febvre the moto win, but the young Belgian vowed revenge -and delivered in race two. This time, Coenen took the lead in the treacherous Lommelwood section and never looked back, much to the delight of the home fans.

In MX2, it was total domination from Kay de Wolf, who was untouchable all weekend. The reigning champion pulled off a flawless 1-1-1 sweep for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, cutting into Simon Laengenfelder’s championship lead and jumping to second in the standings.

Camden McLellan starred once again for Monster Energy Triumph Racing, taking a solid 2-3 for second overall - matching his career-best result. Despite crashes and a yellow flag penalty, Sacha Coenen salvaged a strong third overall, notching his seventh podium of the season.

Further down the field, Mathis Valin, Andrea Adamo, and wildcard Nicolaj Skovbjerg impressed, while Rick Elzinga and Thibault Benistant showed flashes of speed for Yamaha. Jan Pancar surprised many with a career-best sixth in MXGP race two, while privateer Hakon Fredriksen delivered a sensational seventh overall finish.

The MXGP of Flanders was a rollercoaster - fitting for a track as demanding as Lommel. With only a few rounds remaining, the championship battles in both classes are heating up. Just nine points separate Coenen and Febvre in MXGP, while De Wolf now trails Laengenfelder by 38 points, but looks unstoppable in the sand.

Next up is Sweden, where the hardpack will offer a very different challenge. With momentum swinging and title races intensifying, the final run of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship promises fireworks.

Don’t miss it.
