DIRT 3-2-1 MOTOCROSS
By TMX Archives on 23rd Jul 09
THE final day of Dirt 3-2-1, Sunday saw the motocross riders descend on FatCat Moto Park to battle it out for the honours. Heavy rain throughout the day resulted in the racing being cut short to just two counting blocks. A third was run 'just for fun' for those who wanted to brave the elements! This however didn't dampen anybody's spirits with the crowds witnessing some great racing in all classes. First out of the blocks were the Auto riders and it was Dane Clarke-Reeves who claimed two race wins to take the overall from Ethan Cooper. Kurtis Griffiths rode steady all day to finish third overall.
In the Junior class, Johnjoe Wright grabbed the holeshot and the overall with a couple of race wins. Never too far behind were Joe Jacques and Lewis Edwards who fought close in both races and bagged second and third place respectively.
Oliver Osmaston and Max Acres had two tremendous battles in Small-wheel 85cc and they tied on points after both races, but Oliver claimed overall first spot with his victory in race two. Will Wall rode steady each time out to bag third overall.
With the rain hammering it down, Big-wheel 85cc rider Cole Hunter rode superbly to take the overall with two race wins. Lewis Holland, snapping on his heels all day, came home in second while Josh Cadman nailed the final podium position.
David Sweet topped a hotly contested race one in Youth Open ahead of Richard Peers Davies, who claimed the holeshot, with 'Mad Dog' Craig Maddock finishing third. Race two took place during some appalling weather conditions and it was the positive riding style of Maddock that brought him a race win, followed home by Peers Davies and David Sweet. The three riders were tied on points after both races but Maddock lifted the overall with Peers Davies second and Sweet in third spot.
Novice class rider Jordan Wheatcroft won race one with Ryan Thorpe in second and Phil Oxley third. Come the second race and Courtnie Seymour grabbed victory with Stephen Bain second and Oxley with another third place. Jordan Wheatcroft came fourth in race two but clinched the overall from Oxley while the final podium position went to Seymour.
It was wide open the in the Inter class as race one winner Joel Burton failed to score in race two.
Eventual overall winner Gareth Smart bagged a second in race one ahead of Oliver Lisles. In race two, Alex Owen was first to see the finish flag and secured a well deserved third overall. Stuart Danby followed up a fifth in race one with third in race two to mount the second step on the podium. Gareth Smart came home fourth in moto two but was still happy to be top of the pile.
Expert rider Paul Thomas Batty won a close contest in race one ahead of Alex Rockwell with Ryan Mason third. The second race for this class was also run in some dreadful weather conditions with lap scorers hardly being able to identify the numbers on riders or bikes because of the mud. Eventually Ashley Wilde headed the field home and a well deserved second overall. James Lassu finished second but a failure to score in race one meat he was well down the overall pecking order. Harry Saywell bagged third and claimed the final podium position. A fourth place for Batty was enough for him to take the overall win in what was to be the final race of the day.
A big thank-you must go out to the spectators who braved the awful conditions right to the end and to the lap-scorers who helped me out on what was my first Motocross experience – thanks ladies.
