Elder statesman

ON paper, at the start of the year, the British MMX Under 21 Motocross Championship looked like it would be wide open with many of the country's young riders standing a chance of being crowned winner come the end of the year, but as the season unfolded one name kept cropping up Scott Elderfield who, on his way to victory, won six out of the 12 motos, and only once failed to visit the podium at the end of a round.
Round one was at Little Silver in Devon and considering it was February, the weather was great with lots of sunshine making the track in ideal condition.
World MX2 competitor Jake Nicholls made his first of two visits to the championship at this round and was in a class of his own, taking both wins with relative ease.
It was Joe Dark who got the holeshot in race one, but Shane Carless snatched the lead from him by the end of the lap only to have Nicholls pass them both a lap later.
Elderfield, not known for his starts, fought his way to second by lap four with Graeme Irwin nudging Carless off the last step on the rostrum by the end of the race.
Once again, in race two, Nicholls passed early leader Carless by the end of the second lap and was never seen again, apart from lapped riders.
Mattis Karro put Carless under pressure and passed him as Carless made a mistake, dropping him down the field to ninth place while Elderfield, way back at the start of the race in 14th place, was charging up through the pack to finish the race again second to Nicholls.
