Final Wake up call
By TMX Archives on 23rd Sep 10
The Red Bull Pro National series reached its finale as round nine of the country's most colourful motocross series came to a thumping end at the Halstead club's historic track at Wakes Colne, Essex.
Despite the absence of the new MX1 champ, Brad Anderson (PAR Honda), who was off training to represent Britain in next week's Motocross des Nations in the USA, the meeting lost none of its interest and yet again produced an abundance of close spectacular racing in every class.
The weekend's weather was a bit windy to say the least, but at least the forecast rain held off and if you avoided the higher parts of the track the wind wasn't that bad either.
Jason Dougan on his Phoenix Tools Yamaha was the fastest in practice with the determined Elliott Banks-Brown on his MX2 DB Honda not that far behind him and showing the way to all but one of the MX1 riders.
Despite his smaller engine Banks-Brown managed to get the holeshot on the uphill start with MCRD's Suzuki Carl Nunn almost side by side as the pair plummeted down the first drop.
As they came back into view at the end of the lap, Banks-Brown was holding off Nunn as James Noble (propa.com Honda) was third with a flying Dougan fourth, but looking menacing. MX2 series leader, Martin Barr (PAR Honda) was struggling, down in eleventh spot.
By lap six, Dougan was in the lead and settling into a rhythm as Banks-Brown hung onto second and Noble was coming under pressure from CCM's Tom Church.
Noble was having brake troubles and dropped down to eighth by half-distannce as a revitalised Samsung Yamaha-mounted Wayne Smith made his was up to third in the race – and second MX1 rider.
With two-laps remaininng, Church managed to pass Banks-Brown, just as Mattis Karro moved into fifth and Smith slipped back to sixth.
At the flag Dougan crossed the line almost six-seconds clear of Church, Karro and Smith in the MX1 class, while Banks-Brown held off a late charge from Barr and Kawasaki's Kristian Whatley.
Church got a fantastic start in moto two with once again Banks-Brown slotted in behind the leader on the first downhill section. Noble was next with Kawasaki's Bryan MacKenzie fourth.
As the top three sped away, Barr, Smith, Whatley and MacKenzie were left to fight over what was left.
Smith made fourth place his own on lap four at the expense of Barr, as Gert Krestinov took over fifth, pushing the steady riding Barr back to sixth.
In the closing stages Smith had closed on Noble as Whatley ousted Barr, while Neville Bradshaw tried all he could to follow him through.
Church crossed the line just over ten-seconds clear of the first MX2 rider Banks-Brown with Noble third, Smith and Karro filling the next two places.
After the race the overall MX1 winner, Church, said: "I didn't get a very good start in race one and it was hard working fighting my way up to second. In race two, after much better start I managed to get away in the lead and take the win.”
From second spot on the rostrum an unhappy Dougan explained: "I didn't get the best of starts but managed to get through to the front and was quite comfortable from then. I got a terrible start in the second and crashed twice in the first couple of laps. To be honest I think I was lucky to get to where I finished.”
Meanwhile, Noble, who is giving up top flight motocross to work in the family business, said: "I am not too sad at the moment, but maybe next week I will be. I was determined to go out with a podium and I had a problem with the front brake in race one and thought I wouldn't make it in the second, but I was in second and knew that if I finished there I would be near the podium.”
Of his day MX2 winner Banks-Brown said: "I did all I could today. I was fastest MX2 in practice and first MX2 over the line, but it wasn't quite enough to overhaul Martin (Barr) in the final standings.”
Barr: "It feels good to be champion, as it's been a long, hard session. I had a hard start to the year when I broke my cheek bone and had to have an operation and I rode the first round of this series four days after the op. I believe because I did that, I won the series as you have to ride through the pain sometimes. I can get on the plane tomorrow to go to the ‘Nations with a big smile on my face now.”
Whatley: "I had a bike problem in race one. It was misfiring and I didn't get a good start, as usual, so was please to get back up to third. I got a better starts in races two and three and trying to find my way past the 450cc machines.”
Final MX1 championship positions were Anderson from Noble and Nunn with the absent Ben Lamay fourth, while in the MX2 class it was Barr from Banks-Brown, Whatley and MacKenzie.
