The Payne threshold!
By TMX Archives on 6th Sep 10
For the AMCA MX Championship riders, it was a trip to the Cumbrian coast on Bank Holiday weekend and a chance to play in the Haverigg sand, courtesy of the Lancaster MXC, although this was certainly to be no vacation!
After most had fought their way through the awful M6 traffic jams, it was then time to roll up their sleeves and go to work as they disputed valuable points in the penultimate round of the season.
Top honours on Sunday went to Lee Payne in the MX1 class with a perfect maximum score while Carl Benjamin produced a great performance in MX2 to record his maiden AMCA Championship overall victory.
With just one round now remaining of the 2010 Championship contest, it's still the defending kings Ben Saunders and Lee Dunham who lead the respective MX1 and MX2 title chases. At Haverigg, both riders maintained their superb consistency with another podium placing.
In an incredible start to the opening MX1 moto of the day, Clinton Barrs, Brad O'Leary and Richard Cannings all fell on turn three, while up at the front it was young Matthew Williamson who led the way followed by Aaron Crowder, Shaun Pearce and Darren Marklove with Payne and Saunders in hot pursuit.
However, again showing his sand track riding ability to the full, Payne took just two laps to move into top position with Saunders then tucking into second spot just one lap later. From here onwards, Payne simply strolled to victory, finishing a massive 32 seconds clear of Saunders who despite falling still maintained the runners-up slot.
Following their earlier falls, O'Leary, Cannings and Barrs all produced stunning recoveries to earn respective third, fifth and eighth places at the flag.
After leading the opening proceedings, Williamson recorded his best AMCA Championship position of the season with a great fourth as Pearce took a strong sixth. After Saunders had led the opening lap of the second MX1 clash, that man Payne took over to thus record another big win.
In a no-holds barred tussle for third featuring two equally determined riders, the verdict went to Cannings just ahead of O'Leary with Crowder fifth. Gating in 14th place, Rich Meakin moved smartly up the leaderboard to just take sixth ahead of James Lane. Following his great start to the day, Williamson didn't enjoy the best of fortunes on this occasion, retiring on lap two.
Also in trouble was Clinton Barrs, who was not even able to complete one lap after a fellow competitors foot peg had punched a hole through his Delkevic Kawasaki's engine casing!
Making it an unwanted hat-trick, Barrs fell on turn one of the final MX1 clash but up front that man Payne stormed to victory, on this occasion 27 seconds clear of Saunders with Cannings in third.
Finding himself down in 11th on lap one, O'Leary again battled hard to get back to fourth ahead of Crowder, James Lane and Williamson.
Following his earlier tumble Barrs, aboard his spare bike, recovered strongly for eighth with Pearce having another good ride in ninth and Simon Lane tenth.
So, going into the last round of the 2010 series at Norley on September 12, Saunders will hold a 19 point advantage at the top of the table.
However, with Payne in great form, Ben knows that he certainly cannot afford to record a DNF if he is to retain that hard earned crown!
