First blood to Bou
By TMX Archives on 6th Apr 07
TONI Bou, aboard his factory Repsol Montesa HRC four-stroke, continued his domination of the 2007 season to date, with a hard fought victory at the Spanish Grand Prix to add to his recently gained Indoor World title and his two wins in the opening pair of rounds of the Spanish domestic series.
But far from having it all his own way, Bou had to fight off astrong challenge from reigning champion Adam Raga to secure his first20-point haul after a fierce two-lap battle where only five marks separated the Spanish pairing at the finish of the ultra-tough event.
British hero Dougie Lampkin kept his dream of an eighth outdoortitle alive with a confidence-boosting third place, and whilst thisposition was only by virtue of a most cleans tie-break over his Japanese team-mateTakahisa Fujinami come the finish, Lampkin had actually led the trialin the early stages. Albert Cabestany completed the top five with another slightlyunder par performance, as Montesa boasted three riders in the top fourand four in the first six, as James Dabill delivered the best result of his career to come home just behind the Sherco-mounted runner.
Dabill proved to be the talking point of the weekend, as many in thepaddock got their first glimpse of the Leeds based rider since hisswitch to the Italian Future TRW team earlier in the year. After two days of solidpractising, very much on the pace of the World's best, the questionremained if Dabill could produce the goods on the day? With a very vocal andequally confident Jack Lee at his side, the young Yorkie dulydelivered, including taking the scalps of the more fancied home riders Jeroni Fajardo andMarc Freixa, not to mention many other more than capable riders.
There was even more to cheer about on the home front as MichaelBrown romped to a 27-mark clear victory in the Junior class to sethimself up for a real stab at taking this title come late September. The pint-sized Betarider's performance on Sunday was a stark contrast to the day beforewhen he failed to finish in the top ten during the European championship event.
It was a similar story for Alexz Wigg, who had struggled to copewith the difficult conditions on board his 125 against the biggermachines on Saturday, but bounced back to take a brilliant third place in such ahigh-scoring trial just 24 hours later. Wigg's result shows that he canbe a real contender in the Junior series, having elected to move up thisclass a year early, and despite his age restricting him to the smallercapacity bike.
With Sam Haslam in fourth spot and Lee Sampson in sixth, Britain'sfuture at World level bodes well, with four riders in the top sixth andespecially as it was achieved in Spain, who once were the dominant force in the sport.
