France take ISDE

FRANCE enjoyed Trophy Team success for the second consecutive year while Spain proved their worth to top the Junior Trophy Team competition. But for Britain it's was a bittersweet week as the 84th International Six Days Enduro ended in delight for Paul Edmondson and disappointment for David Knight

For Britain's two most successful enduro riders, this year's ISDE in Figueira de Foz was a hugely important event for two very different reasons. For David Knight it was the chance to continue his good form and bring what has largely been a difficult and disappointing season to a positive end. For Edmondson it was the chance to do something no other rider has done before – claim an amazing 16th six day gold medal.

A third consecutive dry, hot, and drama filled, ISDE, come the end of the near week-long Portuguese event it was Paul Edmondson who was celebrating, while Knight was left wandering what could have been.

Securing a record-breaking 16th gold medal result, Edmondson, like most riders, found the event anything but easy. But at least he managed to go the distance and finish with a ninth place Enduro 1 class result. For Knight an impressive Enduro 2 class winning result on day one was followed by a hugely disappointing early exit on day two.

Sitting at the top of the E2 class results, Knight's event was ended following a crash on the second day's very first special test. Determined to match his day one result, Knight parted company with his Kawasaki at speed, hitting the deep sand headfirst. Having well and truly rung his bell, David exited the test and after trying to ride on headed back to the paddock and onto hospital.

Edmondson's event ended the way he hoped it would despite the now 40-year-old finding things tough towards the end of the week. Suffering with sickness prior to the start of the fourth day, Eddy eased his pace to make sure he got to the finish.

"I'm more than pleased with the way things have gone. It's been hard on a smaller bike with the deep sand but getting my 16th gold medal makes all the hard work worth it,” commented Eddy. "Losing David from the team was a big disappointment for everyone, but that's what can happen at the six days.”

With Eddy managing a top ten Enduro 1 class result, as well as finishing as the highest placed Brit in the event, the remaining Trophy team riders all had a relatively trouble free week, despite all being surprised by just how dry and sandy the event was.
