Husabergs Pela Renet and Gas Gas rider Laia Sanz secured the final two Enduro World Championship titles of 2012, as the pair each secured their first-ever EWC titles at the season-closing GP in France. Renets 2/1 result was more than enough to wrap-up the coveted Enduro 2 title, while Sanz became this years EnduroWomens champion.
With Renet having previously secured the motocross MX3 World Championship and Sanz numerous Trials World Championships, the duo also became multi-discipline off-road motorcycle world champions.
Seven long and demanding months after the Enduro World Championship began in Chile in early March, the eight-round series drew to an exciting and somewhat controversial close in Brignoles, in the south of France.
With four of the championship's six class titles decided at the penultimate round of the series in Finland, all eyes were on the battle between Enduro 2 class riders Renet (Husaberg), who started the event as class leader and title favourite, and his closest rival Cristobal Guerrero (KTM).
For Renet it ended up being a dream weekend, while for Guerrero – who started the event carrying a shoulder injury picked up at the ISDE – it would be one of extreme disappointment.
Renet battled with countryman Johnny Aubert throughout the opening day's competition and although it was KTM rider
Aubert who claimed victory by the narrowest of margins, by finishing second Renet needed to claim just a handful of points from the second day to win the E2 title.
And that's exactly what the Husaberg rider did.
With Aubert once again taking top spot and Juha Salminen the runner-up berth, in finishing third Pela secured his first-ever EWC title and Husaberg's first senior class championship in 12 years.
"It's amazing to win my first world championship, especially because I did it here in France,” enthused a delighted Renet.
"I pushed as hard as I could to beat Johnny on day one, and it helped me to forget about the championship.
"Day two was tough because I knew I had to finish but I knew I didn't have to win. It's been a long, hard season
– so to finally win is great.”
Christophe Nambotin dominated both days in the Enduro 3 class to add the Husqvarna Xtreme test award and Mika Ahola ‘Brave One' enduro test award to his Enduro 3 title.
A relative country-mile ahead of his nearest challenger on each day, Sweden's Joakim Ljunggren placed second on both days, with Aigar Leok twice third.
Knowing that the event would be tough, David Knight – who returned to competition the week before the French event, following stomach surgery – battled his way through both days, finishing ninth and seventh for fourth in the E3 world championship.
"It's not the way I wanted to end the season but managing to finish both days was an achievement in itself,
after the time away from racing I've had recently,” said David.
