Browny’s great Scott

MICHAEL Brown claimed his first-ever Scott Trial victory last Saturday, with a dominating ride in the unique time andobservation classic staged, as ever, in the Yorkshire Dales centred on the market town of Reeth.

The Gas Gas UK rider from Scarborough set Standard Time through the 76 observed sections on his way to the premier award, the coveted Alfred Scott Memorial Trophy, to win by 14 marks from three-time Scott winner and Gas Gas team-mate Dougie Lampkin.

Doug posted the best score on observation – just 35 marks dropped through the 76 rocky sections, to the 43 of Browny – but 22 on time, as he slowed after losing his rear brake at the half way point, which proved too much to make up.

The ever-consistent east Yorks ace Ian Austermuhle, who always delivers in the big events, completed the podium for Beta with an excellent 44 on observation.

Michael stormed round the tough, wet, moorland course in a time of five hours nine seconds – the time against which all others would be judged and penalised to the tune of one mark for each minute they took to finish after this time.

The only rider to challenge this on the day was last year's victor, Jonathan Richardson, who was riding an event for the first time in 12 months after a delayed recovery following knee surgery.

In an heroic ride, Montesa-mounted Rich was just four minutes down on Browny but 70 on observation just kept Jonathan off the podium, pipped by Austy by just a single mark.

Ross Danby gave Jotagas a memorable Scott debut with a fine fifth place, ahead of first Sherco home, Richard Sadler, the irrepressible Ben Hemingway completing the main awards. There was disaster for 2012 winner James Dabill though, with Dibs going out before the halfway-mark, saying, "I smashed the water pump on the engine. It wasn't going anywhere.”

This was at Faggergill, and as bad luck would have it, both Dan Hemingway and Sam Connor went out at exactly the same spot as their machines lost water due to head gasket or ‘O' ring problems.
