Gail force!
By Alex Hodgkinson on 9th Sep 11
Toni Cairoli and Ken Roczen clinched another MX1/MX2 world title double for KTM, but the roar for Tommy Searle as the Brit stormed past Jeffrey Herlings to win both the second MX2 moto and the GP overall was on a par with Kennys own reception. I guess I was a German hero, grinned the Brit and he truly was.
If he hadn't hauled in the Dutch teenager, the home fans would have been denied the chance to crown the first German world champion since East German Paul Friedrichs in 1968!
There were mixed fortunes for the remaining Brits.Searle's win secured the series bronze medal but although Max Anstie grabbed another top six GP finish he dropped 11 points on the day to Arnaud Tonus, his rival for fifth in the series.
Jake Nicholls also had to race through the pack for his first moto ninth, but was victim of a wayward rival in race two and effectively lost his outside chance at a top ten final ranking.
Shaun Simpson equalled his best score of the year in MX1 but remains 14th in the standings and Alex Snow and Tom Church also added to their season's points tally.
Roczen didn't get his usual holeshot in the MX2 opener, but within half-a-lap he had sprinted through to second behind Herlings and the crowd had already started to wonder how long the Dutch teenager could resist when he came round alone.
Roczen said: "I stalled in a deeply-rutted turn and I must have knocked it out of gear!”
No sooner had the stunned spectators started to come to terms with the possibility that they might not see Roczen clinch the title than it was Herlings' turn to lose out. "The same backmarker (Justs) who cost me the qualification race yesterday rode across me again,” he fumed.
Roczen was all over Paulin and Tonus to lead again, while Herlings dropped back to a distant fifth, and Searle set the fastest lap as late as lap 15, as he stormed through from a poor start to second. "I was fastest all weekend – I just need better starts,” he admitted.
The title was now on for Roczen in race two, but his holeshot only kept him in front for two corners before Herlings – now needing to win to keep the title hunt open – swept past.
The German maintained the chase, but the Dutch ace was on fire and Searle made it a trio with some sparkling laps.
"Tommy got past me, when I made a mistake,” insisted Roczen later. "But he was going so fast I expected him to catch Jeffrey too... and that would be enough to win the title for me. "But then Jeffrey started to move away again and I took advantage of a slip by Tommy to re-take second.”
Needing to prevent a Herlings victory, Roczen put on a charge, but the track was treacherous for the unwary: "I went down at the same place I took the lead yesterday and thought it was over for this weekend when I got up a long way back in third,” he said. It was at this point that Searle became a German national hero.
Dropping his lap times by two seconds he caught and passed Herlings and the Dutch teenager admitted: "I knew it was over!”
Tommy explained his surge: "I had some good lines but the track surface was difficult. I came into a turn too hard when Kenny passed me back and you could easily get into trouble if you pushed too hard. "I'm now looking to carry my form through to the Nations. Dean Wilson is on it in America too. I want to be on the podium at the Nations.”
Roczen simply rode home third for the title before the emotional scenes at the finish: "I tried not to think about the title until I crossed the line and I didn't think it would be that bad, but I cried like a baby.”
Nicholls and Anstie each had to come from way back in the opener after bogging on the heavy start straight. They were 9-10 by halfway, but the first eight were already too far down the road. Max made amends with a solid fifth in race two, but Jake was right out of luck: "Someone crashed next to me, his bike flipped upside down, his back wheel hit my left elbow and I lost feeling in my hand,” he explained. "Thankfully it was only the nerves that had gone into shock. Now I just have some bruising around the elbow.”
Jordan Booker had his regular early spills and came home 23-22.
