Treasure Ireland

As the Red Bull Pro Nationals made a visit to Northern Ireland and the fantastic Desertmartin venue for the first time, it was local boy Martin Barr, who had the measure of the circuit by taking a pair of hugely popular wins in front of his home fans. While Barr did all he could to keep his title hopes alive, it was a case of too much too late as PAR Hondas Brad Andersons second overall, meant a successful defence of his Pro MX1 title.
Barr (Boost Energy KTM) was the man to beat round the Desertmartin track as he set the fastest time in qualifying, over 2.5-seconds clear of team-mate Nathan Parker, with Anderson down in sixth.
However, when the gate dropped at the start of the race one Barr and Anderson were side-by-side, but Anderson had to back off after being pushed wide on the long drag to the first corner and finished the lap down in seventh spot.
Elliott Banks-Browne (Pulse DB Honda) was hurting with a broken bone in his wrist, but that didn't stop him finishing lap one in second and amongst the MX1 riders, while an on form Bryan MacKenzie was second in MX2 and in fifth overall.
By the end of the fifth lap, Anderson had passed Gert Krestinov and was up to second, but by this time Barr had opened up a sizable gap over the rest of the pack and it wasn't going to be easy to close.
Barr remained in control of things from the front, Anderson and Krestinov second and third with Josh Waterman fourth and Parker fifth.
In MX2 class, and after a titanic battle between Mel Pocock, Banks-Browne and MacKenzie they finished in that order with Neville Bradshaw a distant fourth.
In race two it was Barr again from gate to flag, with Anderson and Parker in tow, as Krestinov got involved in the MX2 battle with Pocock, Banks-Browne and MacKenzie.
So Barr took two wins and the overall, but Anderson wrapped the championship crown with a round remaining. Parker was third on the day, with Krestinov fourth with Crockard making a late charge on his two-stroke Suzuki for fifth. In the MX2 ranks Pocock took the overall from MacKenzie, Banks-Browne and Shane Carless.
After the racing MX1 winner, Barr, admitted: "First in qualifying and two race wins – it's been a great day, and a great birthday present as it was my birthday yesterday. The crowd where amazing and were still out there cheering me on when it was raining!”
Second overall, Anderson, said: "The first race didn't go to plan, there was a bit of pushing and shoving out there, but I fought through even though some of the back markers got in the way.
"In moto two I took my goggles off too early and couldn't see over the big jumps and had to shut off, but I knew what I needed to do to win the title and we did that – so I am very happy!”
Third overall Krestinov: "It was a good day for me. In race one I was running up there with the leaders but Brad got me in the closing stages. In the second I had a bad start and had to fight my way through to fourth.”
MX2 winner Pocock said: "I have been trying to get two wins on the same day for ages, so would like to thank my team for all the hard work they have put in to make it happen.”
MacKenzie said: "I have to be happy with my results. In race one I had terrible arm pump, made a mistake and my head was all scrambled. I started making more mistakes. But in race two I had a good dice with Elliott even after taking my goggles off. We clashed in race two, but it was just one of those things.”
Banks-Browne said: "I can't be unhappy, but I feel I could have won that last moto – broken wrist and all. But hats off to Mel, he was riding well today, and I won't have much to do to win the championship at the last round”
