Gillett stays sharp

ON Saturday, the final round of the Remedies Bar Motocross Champ-ionships took place at Ladram Bay, near Exmouth, Devon, which was followed by a presentation evening at Ladram Bay Holiday Park.
It couldn't have been a better end to the season with all four Champion-ships still to be decided and with the weather on side there was a bumper crowd in attendance to witness some exciting racing.
In Expert Open, Andrew Gillett went in to the final round with a 54-point lead over John May knowing that two consistent rides would give
him the title.
Gillett holeshot the opening race from Henry Western and Kip Herring with May back in fourth.
However, May was soon through to second after Herring's exit with a seized motor on lap two and he passed Western. He caught Gillett on lap three. Closing fast though was David Yelland, who had moved into third.
May eventually passed Gillett on lap six dropping into the valley and Gillett soon had Yelland for company but Yelland picked-up a rear wheel puncture and had to withdraw when the tyre came off the rim. Gillett closed on May again in the closing stages, but to no avail.
Gillett again set the pace in race two from Western, Herring and May. Herring and May overhauled Western on the opening lap and these two engaged in a real tussle, which let Gillett get away a bit.
On lap three, May got the better traction out of a left-hander and flew up the hill in to second.
Two laps later, he caught Gillett, who seemed to let him by, knowing that a safe ride was enough to give him the crown. May went on to take his second win of the day, but all the applause was for Gillett who just held off Mark Gunter in the closing stages to become 2008 Expert Open Champion.
In the final moto, Herring got the best start ahead of Yelland, while Tim Pearce was in third ahead of Gillett and May.
Yelland was all over Herring for several laps desperate to find a gap to pass. Such an opportunity came on lap 6 when Herring nearly dropped it
Herring was soon caught by Gunter and for four laps the pair scrapped it out until Gunter finally squeezed through to second.
Yelland had a full six-second advantage at this stage, but Gunter was on a charge and closed the gap each lap.
Yelland, though, was determined to go out on a high by winning his last race and held on to take the chequered flag.

A close call for Darren Shears as he took the Expert 125cc title by just one point.
