Great eight! - The Scott Trial

Motocross

IN an all-action super-tough Scott Trial, which took place on the sodden moors above Richmond, Yorkshire, last Saturday, Graham Jarvis shaded a narrow victory on his two-stroke Sherco and set a new record of eight overall wins. Future-Montesa's James Dabill set standard time, six minutes faster than Graham while quiet but quick Beta rider Ian Austermuhle completed the podium. Hot favourite Dougie Lampkin lasted just four sections before his Beta expired and a disappointed Doug became a reluctant spectator, while Japanese first-timer, Repsol-Montesa's former World Champ Takahisa Fujinami, stole the hearts of the huge crowd with a typical full-on attack on this unique event and finished a fine fourth.

Only five riders finished this super tough Scott on double figures with all-rounder Wayne Braybrook rounding-up the number as first Gas Gas rider home as only 60 official finishers took the flag from a starting entry of 200. The wet, muddy, 84-mile course, containing 76 sections, proved a real challenge and the attrition rate was high.
Orgate is only three sections into the event but there was plenty of water in the slippery river to show competitors just what they would be facing the rest of the day. The river always claims a few unlucky victims with Richmond club member Chris Laws taking an early bath and finding out exactly how cold the water was. Mark Sunter eased through on a twin-shock Bultaco while Michael Brown's popular minder, Shaughan Galway, took a smooth clean, as did Aussie road-racer Josh Brookes, while fellow tarmac scraper Leon Camier showed his inexperience by missing a flag.
At the back of the field, the aces sped through, with Dabill closely followed by Alexz Wigg and then Jarvis, Ben Hemingway and Fujinami in quick succession.
Doug was, amazingly, only to see one more section, Cold Knuckles, but final starter Martin Crosswaite whizzed through Orgate going strong, unlike last year when he had already had one puncture!
A couple of hours up the road, the field had begun to take some kind of shape as they approached the two sections at Surrender, number 22 in the river and 23 up the spectator-favourite ravine. Number 3, Richard Ridley and 44 Aled Price were pressing on, while Andy Chilton (68) took a nice clean up the gully. It was drizzling steadily as the field streamed through with Thomas Hick (147) well up on time before James Dabill arrived at around 11.30am and his Future Montesa team-mate Alexz Wigg was right with him. Graham Jarvis, Fujinami and Ross Danby were all together while those two battling girls, Katy Sunter and Maria Conway, continued their rivalry and were running a similar pace. Wayne Braybrook was cracking on and had caught up a couple of minutes on Ian Austermuhle while Michael Brown (198) had edged in front of Dan Thorpe (175).
