Good day at Blackrock

AT around half-a-mile long and comprised of a superb mix of natural hills and man-made sections, the second round of the 2007 ORPA Welsh MX Quad championships held at the Hendre track, by Blackrock MXC, provided some superb racing.

As was to be expected, the Hammersley brothers dominated events with Simon at last getting back onto his Yamaha after his recent crash at the British championship.

Simon Hammersley took the opening holeshot with brother David for company as the pair went flat out along the big straights. Edward Davies recovered from a poor start to pass David Williams for third after a couple of laps.

As ever, Simon was sideways through the corners but once David had made the move, it was second spot for the flamboyant redhead.

David Hammersley took a cautious holeshot in moto two, made better use of the grip and took control of the race, not letting his younger brother in with a sniff of the lead as he took the Yamaha to his second chequered flag of the day while Simon had to hold off Davies who this time got a better start.

Moto three saw David Hammersley caught in the elastic and last off the gate as Simon took the sideways holeshot with Davies in his wake. As the gap between first and second opened slightly, David Hammersly came scything his way through the pack, and with the last lap flag out it was Davies in second who was being reeled in. It was too little, too late though and racing was over with Davies in second place

The overall though went to David Hammersley by a single point and he stretched his championship lead over his nearest rival, Edward Davies.

While the Expert class was fairly predictable, in the B class it was a much tighter affair where a number of riders have a shout at top spot. To get there though they will have to work past Morgan Handford who gave it everything to pick up a hard fought hat-trick of wins. Handford had round one winner Richard Williams for company in the opening two motos as the pair battled it out for the lead, each leading until Handford found the slightly faster lines to just take the wins both times. Jamie Haynes was with the pair early on until he beached himself in a berm and with the lightning pace of the racing there was nothing Haynes could do but fight his way to third each time out.

The Blaster class is starting to look like a two-horse race out front. Marco Lewis was quickest out of the gates and opened up a lead of a couple seconds from Stefan Llewellyn each time out. Zowie Estaban was the only girl in the class, a change from years of late. However, the determined youngster took three excellent third spots each time out.

Some of the best racing took place just behind her as Aled Flook, Scott Evans, Ross Francis and Luke Evans took part in a four way tussle.
