Hard days for Knight

KTM Factory rider David Knight strengthened his grip on the 2012 British Enduro Championship at Helmsley last weekend with two clear wins.

On-form Knight had certainly blown away any dust that remained from the first two WEC rounds in Chile and Argentina, but he was not the only Manx-man to have done so.

Gas Gas rider Danny McCanney showed he is also a force to be reckoned with, following Knight home on the opening day of the event despite being in some discomfort with a rib-injury picked up at the recent BSEC round.

The two days of competition were dogged with sleet, snow and showers at times.

Organiser John Kerwin had laid out an impressive 42km loop, mainly through North Yorkshire forests, which saw only a handful of riders stay on time on the opening day.

The Special Test, tough enough in dry conditions, became very hard as the weather took its toll on the Expert and Clubman classes.

Friday's excellent weather conditions soon changed and Saturday morning saw the Championship riders leave in a blizzard.

Memories of the opening round, the Abbey Enduro, came flooding back but an improvement saw the afternoon drier than the morning.

Time checks planned for dry weather were already tight, but became impossible for all but the Championship contenders.

The tricky off-cambers and exposed roots became tougher with every lap on what proved to be a very technical course and test.

Knight proved his ability in the tricky conditions, taking the overall and Championship class E3 win after four tests ahead of McCanney.

KORR's Jonny Walker fought his way to third despite a nasty tumble which saw him taken to hospital.

Tom Sagar, on a Fasteddyracing Honda, took third overall and was top E2 rider, just five seconds ahead of TM's Jordan Rose.

Alex Rockwell rounded out the top three in E2.

Paul Edmondson hadn't ridden competitively since last season's Natterjack, but showed he had lost none of his pace by claiming the top E1/4T spot, four-minutes clear of nearest rivals Rheinallt Davies and MPS Racing's Jack Rowland.
