Hawkstone International off but don't despair too much...

After a deluge of rain and with more forecast, the Salop Motor Club has been forced to cancel Sunday’s Ashbrook Hawkstone International powered by Syntol. After a winter of almost continuous rain, the Shropshire-based sand circuit could simply take no more and the difficult decision was made within a sensible timeframe. Of course, this leaves many of us at a loose end this weekend and, dangerously, with money in our pockets, so what are we supposed to do?

First off, do NOT reinvest it in Valentine’s treats for your better half, no matter how tempting that might seem. While that would be a great short-term investment perhaps, long-term there are much better ways to spend your money. And what’s this summer’s hottest commodity you might ask? GP tickets. And, with three of them – that’s GPs – dropping in a row, some fiscal responsibility might be the only way you get through it without a crippling case of FOMO.

Working in chronological order, the first GP suitable for reinvesting your Hawkstone International hoard in is the British Sidecarcross Grand Prix at Canada Heights, which runs on the weekend of May 30/31. With a better chance than ever of a British win, and some excellent support-class action lined up, this could well be the weekend of the year and we all know that Canada Heights is a lovely spot to hang out for a weekend. The fourth round of the FIM Sidecarcross World Championship, the series will be just warming up nicely when it hits the UK and, with an old-school qualification system, the action comes thick and fast all weekend with never a dull moment. Just as the kids break up for the summer, we get three GPs (almost) on the bounce with the MXGP of Great Britain running on the weekend of July 18/19, TrialGP Anglesey on July 25/26 and then, after a weekend off to calm our nerves, comes the EnduroGP of Wales on August 7/8/9.

Foxhill hosts Round 13 of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship. Yep, that Foxhill. The one near Swindon. Off the GP calendar for a quarter of a century, the sidecars had their GP there last year – and very nice it was too – which proved that the venue is world championship worthy and, with a stack more investment, Infront Moto Racing decided that now was the time to bring modern motocross back to Foxhill with a bang – and it will be a banging weekend. With limited space, this is one GP that might actually sell out, so don’t take the chance – book now and secure your spot. More info here

Changing pace slightly to the world of trials, the promoters of this year’s event have got something special planned for you as TrialGP Anglesey at Trac Mon Anglesey is not just a round of the FIM TrialGP World Championship but a full-on celebration of all things two wheels in something they’re calling Moto Fest. So not only do you get to see the world’s best male and female feet-up superstars doing ridiculous things over fiendishly designed sections, but there are also a million and one opportunities to get involved with other activities too. And finally, wrapping up our British GP ticket-buying guide of the day – I don’t think I slept enough last night as I’m a bit giddy – comes the EnduroGP of Wales, which is based out of Rhayader MC’s Cwmything Hill and visits nearby Saintswell MX for the second summer in a row. With the leading Brits recovered from injury, it should give the home fans plenty to shout about – not that the atmosphere was lacking last year when Josep Garcia, Andrea Verona and Zachary Pichon dominated. It’s well worth a look and, with two venues and a variety of tests to check out, it’s great value for money. More info here.

So yes, Hawkstone might be off, but the summer most definitely isn’t. If anything, this little meteorological misfortune is simply an early reminder to plan ahead, spend wisely and make sure you’re trackside when the tapes go up on the biggest weekends of the year. The rain may have won this round, but there are plenty more battles to come – and they’re the kind you’ll want a front-row view of.
