High Payne threshold

The AMCAs 2012 Motocross Championship arrived at the south east of the country for round four at the Sidcup clubs famous Canada Heights circuit at Swanley, in Kent, courtesy of the Eastbourne MC.

And what a weekend of racing it was as Lee Payne won all three of his MX1 races – event though he didn't have things all his own way.

In the more closely-run MX2 class Jack Cox took two wins and a second.

The weather was kind to the club, with two overcast days, combined with a decent temperature making for comfortable racing and spectating.

Luke Dean was fastest in qualifying by more than two seconds from the rest of the field.

But it was the on-form Payne that made the holeshot in the first MX1 race from last year's champion, Lee Dunham, with series leader Clinton Barrs riding in his wheel tracks and Dean fourth.

Barrs made a mistake on lap two that dropped him down two places behind Dean and Stephen Tillotson and into the sights of Shaun Pearce, but within three laps of the testing track he was back up to fourth place.

With three laps to go it was Payne from Dean and Dunham with Barrs still fourth and Pearce all over the back of Tillotson, as the pair fought over fifth.

Payne stretched out a lead of just over eight seconds as the race come to a close, with Dean a comfortable second from Dunham, Barrs and Pearce.

Once again it was Payne who got the holeshot at the start of the second race and he set off at a blinding pace, leaving the rest to fight over second place.

As Dean, Dunham and Barrs were caught in a battle for second they were letting Payne escape, but as the race reached the halfway stage they started to reel him in.

Lap after lap Dean and Dunham chased him down, dropping Barrs in the process.

With two laps to go the three fastest riders were wheel to wheel and it looked like it was going to be a very close finish.

Payne seemed to find that extra bit of speed though, taking his second win of the day, almost three seconds clear of Dean, who was in turn just over eight seconds up on Dunham.

Barrs was a distant fourth from Tillotson and Chad Yarranton.

The last MX1 race of the weekend was once again all about Payne as he made it three holeshots from three starts and was never really challenged the whole race, winning by almost 13 seconds.

Behind him, Dunham gated second and finished in that place while Pearce, third placed man for most of the race, was overtaken on the last lap by Barrs, who had had an eighth place start.

Pearce had to settle for fourth with Tillotson fifth, as Dean crashed on the opening lap and was down in 34th, but ended the race 17th.
