HM Ivan is king of Mettet

ITALIAN Ivan Lazzarini, on his HM Assomotor Honda, won the ten- lap final of the 23rd running of the Proximus Superbiker event in a wet and windy Mettet, Belgium last weekend, in front of a massive and enthusiastic international crowd.
The format is simple, take a monster entry of 320 supermoto riders from all over the world who race in six heats on Saturday, with the top ten going through to the Supermoto semi finals. Then run six repechage races early Sunday with the top four being added to the semi's as well. Add to these 20 of the world's best Supermoto riders, whom the club have already seeded through, and you have 40 very fast riders going for it round the roads of Mettet in a two-leg event for the Supermoto title.
Running alongside this is the two race Starbiker event for those riders who are, or have been, at the top of their own specialised branch of motorcycle sport, other then supermoto, and this contained numerous world and AMA champions past and present. Then, when all these races are run the top finishers from each group meet in the grand final for the Superbiker title for 2009.
And if that isn't enough, running alongside all this is the Superquader event with two heats going through for the main event on Sunday!
The weather in this part of south Belgium wasn't that good for the three-day event with a wet Friday followed by very heavy rain overnight, giving way to a brighter and better Saturday, but as the riders and officials got up on Sunday it was drizzle that turned to rain which was then on and off for the rest of the day.
