AS the 9.30am Saturday start time for the Youth Quad races approached, the waves were lapping up on the beach some 60 yards from the spectator fence! For Weston, it was a small crowd that had crossed the single bridge giving access to and from the beach at the pits end of the course.
With an entry at somewhere around the one hundred mark for the Youth Quads race the comparatively narrow start-straight at Weston – a shorter version of that set out for the adult racers – was handled without too much fuss before the first corner of the day where Jake Veitch took the holeshot ahead of Luke Cooper, Connor Smith and Christian Morris.
For 2009, the track was wet and it did not take long for the main pack of younger riders to get stuck on the first small four-foot mini dunes. The leaders broke away only to have a rude awakening on the first big dune they faced.
