FATHER and son parings filled the top two places in the opening round of the 2010 Challenge Lusky British Sidecar Trials Champ-ionship in the Isle of Man on Saturday, but it was the Rochester duo of Rupert and Chris Kimber who came out best by a clear 12-mark margin.

On the eve of his 26th birthday, all-rounder Rupert rode a mature trial on his 290 Beta to claim only his second success at British championship level – having previously won in Wales in 2008.

For his father Chris, 58, it was an even greater achievement as this time last year he was a mere eight stone in weight as he fought to overcome chemotherapy following a serious operation for cancer of the tongue.

‘‘I'm the oldest passenger in the series but I'm feeling on top of the world right now,'' he beamed, playing his part in what ultimately proved to be a fairly comfortable victory.
