James Stewarts miserable supercross season continued at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara on Saturday night. The former champ was in good spirits earlier in the day while he walked the track.
"The last few races I've had have been pretty rough and at Daytona I ended up hurting my back so I was struggling with that for a bit,” said the Yoshimura Suzuki rider.
"I'm just glad to be semi not hurting too bad but I wanted to come here and race – I need some seat time before we start going racing outdoors.
"I feel better, it's just as the season's gone on I haven't been able to build any kind of momentum so I've got to start somewhere.
"Just getting some practice in and getting some good laps in is what I really need and go from there.
"No real goals besides getting out of here healthy and just continuing to improve."
The day started well for Stewart when he followed Dungey home in his heat race but a mechanical problem put him out of the Main Event after seven laps.
