Jarvis is Tough enough!
By TMX Archives on 25th Mar 11
Bringing his Hell's Gate winning form back to the UK, Husaberg's Graham Jarvis dominated the seventh running of the International Tough One at the event's first running at Back Cowm Quarry, near Rochdale. With a new home following six-years at Nantmawr Quarry, near Oswestry, a new course and absolutely perfect weather all ensured a tough day's sport for all competitors and an enjoyable day out for the large number of spectators that turned out to see the action.Report and Pictures: Jonty Edmunds
Despite setting off from the Le Mans-style start in second to last position there was nothing that could stand in Graham Jarvis' way at the seventh running of The International Tough One as the factory Husaberg backed rider quickly overcame a disastrous start to dominate and win the three-hour race.
Pre-event favourite, thanks in no small part to his Hell's Gate win less than one month ago, Graham never looked like doing anything other than winning despite his poor getaway. Up to second behind early race leader, Germany's Andreas Lettenbichler on his Husqvarna, Graham was leading before the end of the opening lap and never looked back.
"I thought I'd managed to run to my bike pretty quickly but all of the other riders seemed to get onto their bikes and get going faster than I did. I think I was second to last, which wasn't what I wanted!” explained Graham afterwards.
Despite hitting the front early on, arm-pump ensured that Jarvis was never too far out front. "I managed to work my way past most of the riders during the first half of the opening lap, but I had really bad arm-pump. At the end of the first hour I think I was less than two-minutes ahead, so I started to put in a few quick laps.
"The last 30-minutes, and especially the last two laps, were really hard – it was just a case of slogging it out to the end.”
With Jarvis eventually finishing some ten-minutes clear of his closest competitor, the real excitement at the end of the race was for the runner-up spot between KTM-mounted Paul Bolton and Lettenbichler.
With Bolton ‘riding badly' from the start and with ‘Letti' frustratingly breaking his rear brake-lever on lap two, the duo fought back and forth for the runner-up spot, with Bolts eventually making it a British one-two.
"Things weren't good for me off the start,” admitted Bolton. "I got caught up with a few other riders early on and just seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It wasn't until after the fuel stop that I sorted things out and managed to get into a decent rhythm.
"That's when I was able to start reeling ‘Letti' in. Once I could see him I really got the bit between my teeth and started closing the gap and eventually got past him.”
