LATEST NEWS: NO WESTON RE-RUN!
By TMX Archives on 15th Oct 09

THE future of the Weston Beach Race, the biggest off-road event in the UK, currently hangs in the balance following the announcement on Tuesday afternoon that this year's cancelled main event will NOT be re-run. Organiser Gareth Hockey of RHL, had been locked in talks with the local authorities and all relevant parties, in an attempt to re-stage the race this coming Sunday - but were ultimately thwarted by the medical services who stated that they could not provide the required cover at such short notice.
An emotional Hockey told T+MX on Tuesday night, As things stand right now this is the end of Gareth Hockey and the Weston Beach Race. I put so much effort into this weekend and then this happens. Although part of me told me not to seek to re-run the race , in respect of the injured lad, I really wanted to run this Sunday for the riders.
Many are screaming for a refund of their entry fee but the fact is I don't have the money to pay them. The entry fee monies all go into funding the event. I do feel desperately for them and will try and do something, maybe we can work something out with the local authority. Maybe they could guarantee a free entry or at least discount if the event runs next year. I don't know, I am working on it.
Hockey also told T+MX, I know some people have said we didn't have sufficient medical cover but the fact is we had more than enough, more than we have ever had including doctors on site.
Gareth concluded, I will be issuing updated press releases but just give me a couple of days while we clear-up in Weston. There will also be updates on the Weston website www.wbruk.com when I have further news.
T+MX will of course keep readers right up to date with news on the future of the Weston Beach Race.
