The ACU Motocross Committee enquiry into the multiple bike pile-up in the opening MXY2 race at Lyng on March 20 has failed to reach a concrete conclusion.

The accident occurred in the early stages of the moto, the third race on the programme at the first round of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship, when a rider crashed on the blind side of a jump. The ensuing pile-up claimed at least one-third of the field including TMX columnist Tom Grimshaw.

Four members of the Motocross Committee – including series Race Director Steve McCauley – along with ACU Events Series Manager Stuart Drummond and Clerk of the Course Andrew Hay were present.

The committee viewed video and photographic evidence, heard from an eye-witness – who did not see the full incident – and was presented with several written reports including a statement from the Assistant Clerk of the Course who was the first official to attend the incident.

With some of the evidence proving to be contradictory, the committee decided against direct action.

‘The enquiry was never set up to apportion blame, it was simply meant to gain a clearer picture of exactly what happened and unfortunately it failed to do that,' said an ACU statement released on Tuesday. ‘The committee realises that many people would have wished for a clearer picture of exactly what had occurred, however with the lack of conclusive evidence available this was not realistically possible.

‘Nonetheless after a full discussion the Motocross Committee wishes to stress that ongoing marshal training is taking place at many events and a riders' briefing will be included in the next round of the championship later in the month'.
