The final round of the 2011 Maxxis British Motocross Championship rolled up at a wonderfully groomed Hawkstone Park, under the finest sky this country has seen in 100 Octobers.
Surely this was the most fitting of venues for a series finale where – despite the two main Championships having already been sewn-up – Hawkstone served notice that motocross is not dead in this country yet.
We waved goodbye to some old-stagers at their very last Maxxis but welcomed with open arms some riders just planting the seeds of what could be very fruitful careers. The 2011 MX2 champ Arnaud Tonus laid down a qualifying lap of 2:07.1 – a time which wasn't beaten all day - and promptly nailed the rest of his class to the wall.
Tonus repeated the 2:07 in Superpole and left Jake Nicholls and the rest three seconds or more further back.
The first moto turned out like so many in 2011, with Tonus grabbing an early lead and galloping off for an unchallenged victory.
The story behind was slightly different with Bryan Mackenzie, Mel Pocock and Neville Bradshaw having a great dust-up for second.
Jake Nicholls sat in fifth ahead of another conflict between Steven Clarke and newly crowned MXY2 Champion Ryan Houghton.
HM Plant KTM rider Houghton, in his first adult outing, chased Clarke hard before coming a gutser at the top of Hawkstone Hill and rolling almost to the bottom.
As the moto wore on Nicholls and Clarke settled for fifth and sixth and Bry Mac piled on the coals to secure second.
Bradshaw meanwhile had designs on third, but Pocock held firm to the chequered flag under enormous pressure.
Heat two followed much the same pattern, with the same seven riders getting the drop on the rest of the field.
Houghton this time collected his seventh-place score, surely a sign of things to come for the youngster from Chelmsford.
Clarke carded another healthy sixth with Pocock, Bradshaw and Bry Mac in the thick of things in the top five.
LPE Kwacka runner MacKenzie scored best again (third) holding off more pressure from Bradshaw (Maunders Honda).
Nicholls had earlier bolted at the front knowing full-well that a midweek illness would seriously dent his stamina.
Tonus, calm enough in second, was like a lion stalking his prey lap after lap, until Jake wilted with four laps to go.
Tonus cruised to another chequered flag leaving little room for sentiment.
