MX Diary: AMCA fight heats up
By Mike Wood on 3rd Aug 16
The AMCA British Motocross Championship powered by Datatag and supported by Dunlop reaches its penultimate round this Sunday (August 7) at Brookthorpe.
Hosted by the Cheltenham Spa MXC, the event should see a two-way battle for the MX1 crown between Luke Burton and Gary Gibson.
At the most recent round at Boraston it was Gibson who took both moto wins but the DK Offroad-Kawasaki pilot still has plenty of work to do as he trails Burton by 51 points.
With a Boraston podium Richard Cannings has jumped back into third in the standings as the combination of James Dodd, Ryan Crowder and defending champion Luke Dean remain in the hunt for a final medal position.
Although Ray Rowson has won the last two MX2 rounds, there's no doubt who's leading the charge to the title. Josh Waterman is the pilot in control, 151 points clear of Lewis King.
With 13 two-stroke motos completed, Ben Saunders boasts an incredible record of nine wins and four second places. A comfortable 93-point gap is now the difference between himself and James Lane who has remained a serious title challenger throughout. Teenager Rory Jones sits seventh and also leads the 125cc class.
The Vets championship chase has been dominated by the current top three of Matt Gordon, Simon Lane and Terry House. Between them they have shared all 13 moto wins with Gordon leading the way on 704 points, defending champ Lane on 659 and House on 625.
Brian Staples leads the Over 50 class.
Admission charges are £7 for adults, £5 for OAPs and no charge for under 14s. The first race is at 11am. Postcode is GL4 0UT.
