A new FIM ruling may force Jeffrey Herlings to move into the MXGP class for 2017, although at the time of going to press there was nothing in the way of confirmation.

It is believed that the FIM MXGP Commission and MSMA (Motorcycle Sports Manufacturers' Association) have agreed to bring in a rule that restricts MX2 riders to two world titles.

The 21-year-old Dutchman is, of course, already well on his way to his third crown.

Speculation as to whether Herlings would move up to MXGP in 2017 voluntarily has been widespread but, speaking to OTOR's Adam Wheeler, Herlings appeared unconcerned.

"I guess the rule has come in because they want to make MXGP the main attraction and

I understand that," he said.

"It is the premier class and the one everybody wants to see. It brings a better show.

"From my point of view I have mixed feelings about the change but if that's the rule then we have to accept it and go from there.

"We planned to start testing [the 450] in this small break and then I had a small fracture in my heel and that changed a lot.

"Our main idea was to test and make a decision with a view to moving up anyway. KTM would like to see me in MXGP and I would not say they are forcing me.

"But I'm sure they would prefer to see me in the big boys class."

Currently holding a 169-point lead, Herlings could tie up the title in time for a move up to MXGP for the Dutch GP at Assen.
