MXGP: Britz blitz!

By TMX Archives on 5th Aug 15

Motocross

It was a weekend to tell the grandchildren about at Lommel as the British national anthem rang out four times around the worlds toughest motocross arena!

Shaun Simpson and Max Anstie each grabbed a triple helping of glory in MXGP and MX2, Brad Anderson went 1-1 for the second time in eight days in EMX300 and teenager Jack Bintcliffe scored an overwhelming double in the 150s.

"This was probably the roughest I've ever seen Lommel,” said Simpson. "This is real motocross with plenty of bumps, guys getting tired, regrouping to put in sprint laps.

"It was so difficult – but so enjoyable!”

Anstie was also over the moon after conquering Lommel for the second year in a row. "I haven't ridden here since last year but you don't forget this place,” he said.

"The track design and prep was awesome. All of those small jumps made it even more difficult to maintain momentum.

"What a way to round out 12 solid weeks of racing. I'm happy we've got a fortnight off now.”

And it wasn't just the winners who were rolling out the superlatives.

"At the end my legs were gone,” admitted world leader Romain Febvre.

"The rider, not the bike, made the difference this week,” declared Petar Petrov after grabbing a career-first podium.

"This place is unique, it's a killer,” reckoned Ryan Villopoto.

Anderson and Bintcliffe had already set the ball rolling with double wins in their Euro classes. The stocky 14-year-old from Yorkshire showed grit to move out of the pack going into turn one on Saturday and simply cleared off for the win but the Sunday morning affair was closer as a slip handed the lead temporarily to red plate holder Emil Weckman.

"I tried to keep calm when Emil went by but I took some deep breaths, stayed with him and found somewhere to pass him back.”

Ando's double was even more dramatic.
"I got off to a decent start on Saturday but the bike was running bad and I stopped at the corner after the finish jump on the first lap,” he said. "It cleared again after a bit and I set off again but I couldn't believe it when I pulled back 10 seconds on the last lap to win. When we checked it afterwards the problem was water in the fuel.”

Race two was another grinder.

"They were going at each other for the lead so I just let 'em get on with it and picked 'em off at the end,” added Ando.
Conrad Mewse was as fast as anyone in the 125s but again his starts and first few turns cost the West Country lad as he narrowly missed the podium while Adam Sterry's tough rides back to series second spot in EMX2 would have made headlines on any other weekend.

The most stunning action of all was reserved for Sunday afternoon. The immaculate Anstie and the death-defying 100 foot quad leaps of Simpson had already controlled qualification and the act continued when it counted.

First to the line was MX2.
The Dixon crew have got the starts sorted and Anstie emerged from turn one as leader, only to lose the lead immediately to Pauls Jonass.

The Latvian teenager is renowned for his electric opening laps and his equally rapid fade a couple of laps in so it was simply a matter of course for Anstie to let the rookie lead for a couple of laps before overpowering him to move away at two seconds a lap until the orange bike was out of his wheel tracks.

Tim Gajser and Valentin Guillod, the joint effective points leaders, had each crashed on Saturday and the Swiss struggled manfully to 12th after under-rating the challenge of Lommel in his preparation.

The Slovenian was more workmanlike for fifth but could thank a last lap fall by Julien Lieber, a mechanical for Davy Pootjes and a poor performance by Jordi Tixier for three of his four advances in the course of 35 minutes.

Race two was Anstie all the way with Jonass quickly second as Petrov burnt himself out in the first two laps when he tried to stay with the Brit.

Gajser salvaged a seventh but Guillod's weekend went from bad to worse as Brent Van Doninck binned it on a landing and the Swiss, already committed, demolished his radiator when he landed on the stricken Yam.
