2021 MXGP of The Netherlands postponed - French MXGP cancelled
By Andrew Hill on 24th Mar 21
The 2021 MXGP of The Netherlands has been postponed, derailing the planned start of MXGP in Oss.
Just two months from now we should have just finished enjoying the first winners standing on the Oss podium in the Netherlands as the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship kicked into gear.
That, sadly, will not happen.
Although the MXGP of The Netherlands is still on the official provisional schedule, the local organiser has called it the round cannot go ahead on May 23 as planned.
It's the second Oss motocross event to be hit this weekend's planned opening round of the Dutch Masters of Motocross is also off.
In consultation with Infront, organiser Ebert Dollevoet has started the process of looking for an alternative date for the MXGP Oss event.
Unsurprisingly, the current state of restrictions in Europe with a new surge starting up has made things too difficult for the organiser.
Together with Infront Moto Sport, a new date is now being looked at later this year, said a statement.
It is a pity that we are not allowed to organise on May 23, because then we would have had the first Grand Prix of the season, said Dollevoet.
Nevertheless, all the work we have already done has not been in vain and we can take it with us to the new date.
It is not yet known what the new date will be, but it will not be very long before a final decision will be made.
I would like to thank the municipality of Oss for the great cooperation and the employees for the hard work they have already put into the circuit and the wonderful result they have achieved.
We are going to do everything we can to make it a great event later this year.
Its the second round of the 2021 MXGP championship to be hit with issues. Just a few days ago the MXGP of Saint-Jean dAngly was cancelled again, not by Infront but by the local organiser.
And unfortunately, they will not be seeking a new date. That venue for a French GP is off the MXGP calendar for 2021.
Unfortunately, the current situation and the uncertainties are still too great to take the risk of organising, said club president Jean-Marie Boissonnot.
After having worked on various projections with gauges of 3,000, 5,000 and 7,000 spectators, we failed to make a case.
We tried to find a financial agreement with Infront concerning the amount of organisation fees. The FFM made great efforts, but despite everything, we did not succeed in reaching an agreement.
For the durability of the Moto-Club, I dont want to take any risks. An MXGP French GP in Saint-Jean costs money and requires a lot of energy. I really hope we will be back in 2022.
The date is free, which means that another French club can take a position, starting with Ernee.
Steve Dixon has been speaking this week about the possibility of a British MXGP in 2021 and he remains optimistic that we will see MXGP racing at Matterley Basin in 2021.
However, Dixon did stress that there is no point holding a GP in England only for the series to have nowhere else to go.
Infront has suggested on more than one occasion they are still open to the idea of a British GP, but they have offered no more detail on this yet.
Just days before the organisers announcement that Oss will be postponed, Infronts Giuseppe Luongo was insisting that the 2021 MXGP calendar will start in Oss. Perhaps it will but that appears contrary to the Oss statement.
Interestingly, Infront are in the process of negotiations for a GP to be held at Riola Sardo, Sardinia, Italy. I don't know yet if at the beginning or at the end of the championship, Luongo explained.
It likely wont be long before well see another revision of the 2021 MXGP schedule with June the date we are hearing as the start of the series watch this space.
Update March 31, 16:30 BST: There has been a number of changes to the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship.
