Conrad Mewse rocks paddock as he leaves Hitachi KTM team
By Andrew Hill on 14th Jan 22
Pro motocross rider and two-time British MX2 champion Conrad Mewse has shocked fans today with the news he has abruptly quit the Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee race team just weeks from the start of the new season.
Only a few days ago Hitachi KTM were asking their followers would Conrad land on the FIM Motocross World Championship MX2 podium for the first time come the 2022 campaign. And now Mewse has announced he has "with regret" left the British-based outfit.
"It is with regret I have to announce my departure from the Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee race team," he wrote in the statement that will surprise many.
"I have informed the team principal of my decision to leave the team with immediate effect."
"I have proudly enjoyed winning two British MX2 titles for the team along with a podium result for Team Great Britain at the MXON and many other race wins.
"I would like to thank KTM, my loyal sponsors, supporters, fans, family and friends for their continued support. Although my plans are not yet in place for the new season, I can assure everyone that I hope to be lining up on the start line and seeing you all in the season ahead."
So right now, Mewse has no firm plans in place. However, the talented 22-year-old Brit, who is in his last year of the MX2 class, appears confident he'll be set for this coming term.
Although not unheard of, it's still highly unusual for such a high-profile athlete to be, by all appearances, "back on the market" with the season just over a month away.
The team has not released a statement at this time and, for now, is left with Isak Gifting as the sole runner in MX2. The Swede is tipped as a possible star of the future.
Mewse has been with the KTM team for four seasons and while he has shared some frustrating classifications, he has shown impressive speed, delivered a Nations podium and several impressive results on the international stage. Not to mention, he is, by far Britain's standout MX2 rider and is the reigning British champion.
It will be fascinating to see what happens with this one.
