JOHN Maxfield, riding a 250 Triumph, made the long trip from Yorkshire to Essex worthwhile by winning Class A, for British made machines, at the Phil King East Anglian National Trial, which incorporated the first round of the ACU's Normandale Traditional Trials Championship.
The Colchester club set out this ‘old school' event which included 25-miles of road-work, and 40 testing sections for the record entry of 121 riders to complete before the forecast snow in the afternoon.
Report and Pictures: Dick Law
Maxfield was a hard act to follow as he went all the way to section 11 before he lost his first mark, and with another loss in the next group he looked to be set for a great score. Maxfield only had a couple of twos towards the end of the event, giving him a total of just six marks lost. Second was last year's class winner
Chris Gascoigne on his 250 James, but a couple of twos and threes saw him finish just five behind Maxfield.
Carl Batty, also on a James, couldn't have got off to a worse start as he fived the very first section, but he rallied himself to finish third just three marks behind Gascoign.
James Newstead, on a 175 BSA, a bike that was made before he was born, finished fourth on 17, with four times winner Dave Thorpe riding a 200 Triumph just one point behind him.
In the Twin-shock class, Ian Baker had a great ride with just two single dabs, one at the Alphamstone group, and the other at the first section at Pebmarsh.
He was chased home by all-rounder Chris Koch, who was riding a very special Twin-shock Cotswold Yamaha. However, a three on section 18 cost him the win.
Behind them, Kev Nolan and Steve Monk tied on 13, with Nolan getting third place on most cleans. Andy Berrell was fifth with a total of 17, but a costly couple of sections from the end robbed him of a possible third place finish.
The Air Cooled Mono Class was won by Mark Reason on his 250 Fantic losing ten. Five of which were in the very tricky section 19.
Nic Draper finished just three points behind Reason, he being the only rider in class to register anything other then a five on the dreaded section 19. However he took a five on the relatively easy section three.
Phillip Martin riding a 250 Montesa won the Over Forty class on ten with the next four riders; Andy Collins, David Braithwaite, Simon Levett and Ashley Hall all finishing within three points of Martin.
Clive Charlton on a 250 Beta won the Over Fifties class on ten, with second place man Stephan Farral close behind.
A small amount or riders took part in the Over Sixty class, and that was won by Jon Bliss on 42. One of the most remarkable rides of the day must go to Doug Theobald, age 71, who was making a comeback after badly breaking his leg.
Another remarkable ride went to a rider not taking part in any of the championship classes, and that was Sam Haslam on his 300 JST Gas Gas who completed all 40 sections, and only lost a single mark.
