Orange Crush

By Alex Hodgkinson on 19th Apr 13

Motocross

The orange roadshow rolled on last Sunday, as KTM aces Toni Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings blasted to another set of doubles at Arco di Trento, Italy.

But Brit Tommy Searle's confidence took a tremendous boost when he stormed through the field from last to sixth in race two.

Searle's cumulative race time from turn two was even faster than Toni Cairoli, after he had been cannoned out of second place by Clement Desalle.

Jake Nicholls lost his podium chances in MX2 at the same turn, when he ran into Australian Dean Ferris.

A massive crowd – double the normal attendance for Italy as German, Swiss and Austrian fans boosted the ranks – lined the switchback gravel track above Lake Garda.

And Cairoli – for once – performed on his home turf.

"I knew after yesterday that the starts were vital, and fortunately today I took two holeshots.

"From there it was plain-sailing,” the champion admitted after career victory number 57, to equal Joel Smets, with only Stefan Everts now on more wins.

Neither win was a runaway and Searle's season took a turn for the better as he slipped into second each time.

Sadly the Brit wasn't able to maintain it to the finish in either moto.

He said: "I feel like I can ride their pace for the first few laps but then I take bad lines and tense up.

"That's what happened in race one. There are five of us up front and once they have got past, I can stay with them again.”

Having chased home Paulin, Desalle and De Dycker, Tommy again gated second in race two but his hopes of staying there were over at turn two.
