Out of Mallory...
By TMX Archives on 4th Jun 09
KTM nearly made a clean sweep of the main classes at Mallory on Sunday, but two crashes in the space of a lap by Max Nagl gifted David Philippaerts his first GP win for nine-months, and Marvin Musquin's MX2 double came on his debut in orange after a mid-week defection from Honda. But a win is a win, and 21st century philosophy is quite clear if you can't beat 'em, buy 'em!A large crowd not massive but enough for RHL promoter, Gareth Hockey, to declare on Sunday evening, to be sufficient to continue the project MXGP in the UK knew in advance that they could expect little in the way of major success from their ravaged warriors, but Stephen Sword, Brad Anderson, Billy MacKenzie and Carl Nunn in particular put up a glorious fight, and they were joined in the points of one of the most exhilarating GPs of the year by Jason Dougan, Jordan Rose, Bryan MacKenzie, Jake Nicholls and Neville Bradshaw.Report and Pictures: ALEX HODGKINSON WITH the top three in the standings outside the first ten to the gate, and red plate holder Toni Cairoli nursing an injured hand and back – "I can't sit down. I will have to stand all day” – it was anybody's guess, who would leave turn one in front, but in the end it was the KTM of Nagl and the Yamaha of Philippaerts which took command from the word go.
Billy MacKenzie completed the first lap in tenth, but set off on one of his startling early charges until Ken De Dycker came charging through in his usual dynamic style, brusquely pushing aside rivals on his way.
"Yes, there was contact, but I didn't fall. I did that on my own as I tried to go back under him,” admitted the Scot, adding, "But I was in pain from my hand long before that. I didn't have a strong enough local anaesthetic and I could feel it already on the line.”
Brad Anderson had started even better and ran sixth for eight laps before storming past Mickael Pichon to hold fifth for four glorious laps. He even re-passed De Dycker as the world stars nibbled at his rear wheel before missing a berm and losing a further two places in the furious lower leader-board battle. The final straw after a glorious effort came five laps from the end: "The back wheel stepped out on a take-off”. With the inevitable result!
Brad was still best Brit in 12th, two ahead of Carl Nunn – "I only decided to come last week. Yesterday was brilliant but I struggled with myself and never found a rhythm all race in that one” – with Jason Dougan 15th. Bryan MacKenzie kept going despite massive arm pump on his factory Honda debut to salvage 19th, but Saturday hero Kristian Whatley missed the points by a place after crashing out of an early 16th spot. Tom Church lost 17th two laps from the end with a flat rear tyre.
But what of the front-runners?
"The track was difficult today and it would have been easy to crash, so I didn't push too hard,” reckoned Philippaerts, holding a defendable second after rudely dismissing Clement Desalle's early attempt to pass. "I pushed a little harder in the final ten-minutes, but if Max hadn't fallen I would not have caught him.”
The German, finally freed of discomfort in his throttle hand, was flying, but a momentary lapse cost him dear: "It was just a brief lapse of concentration, but that was enough. And then I tried to go back past David and went down again. But I'm angry with myself for that, there was no way I was going to make that pass stick there.”
The mistake pushed him back to fourth behind Desalle and Barragan as the quartet out-distanced the rest by half-a-minute.
Josh Coppins rode a strong second half to head the chasers, and explained his mid-race lack of pace: "I don't know where it happened – I touched with Nagl at the start and Anderson when I went past – but I had broken spokes in the front wheel and couldn't push too hard.”
De Dycker – "I couldn't attack the big jumps because of my back and I had to settle for what I had in the last ten minutes when the pain increased in my hand.”
Not quite!
Pichon: "I wanted to make sure I finished both races and didn't get hurt, so I took it quite easy. But I lost sixth to Ken when a lapper blocked me four corners from the finish!”
Cairoli – 16th on lap one – finished tenth.
The second race was all about Max Nagl. The German tore past Philippaerts on the opening lap, made no mistakes and simply disappeared into the distance. The Italian knew second was enough to win the GP but admitted: "Max was too fast today. Anyway, I was looking to score good points in both motos for the championship, and that is what I did.”
Desalle completed the podium after another strong ride: "I could have been second, but I crashed at the corner after Pit Lane when I was coming to Philippaerts and had to race back from sixth.
Billy MacKenzie had a gritty ride to fifth behind Coppins, Nunn reverted to his Saturday form to come home tenth, Anderson was a solid 12th and Jordan Rose grabbed points in 18th with Church the unlucky 21st this time.
Bryan MacKenzie had been involved in an incident with Aigar Leok and Barragan on lap one which left all three trailing from the word go.
