ITALIAN Ivan Lazzarini on his HM Honda did all he could to hold-off S1 Supermoto series leader, Thierry Van Den Bosch, riding a factory TM, in a frantic battle for supremacy at round two of the World Supermoto Championship on Saturday. In the S2 class it was Frenchman Adrian Chareyre who took two wins from two starts as Britain's best pair of Matt Winstanley and Christian Iddon had a disastrous day. The Supermoto Championship round was held the same weekend and at the same venue as the Motocross Grand Prix of Great Britain, Mallory Park, and used part of the existing road race circuit with some newly built off-road sections. The start was in its usual place for road racing, but the riders had to turn almost as they left the start line onto the first off-road section, with a series of fast challenging jumps where the riders joined the tarmac to travel to the hairpin. It was then down the other side to another off-road series of S-bends then back out on the long start straight to complete the lap.
Racing started after motocross practice had finished and the first of the combined S1 and S2 classes kicked-off with the sun low in the evening sky.
With both classes racing at once it was hard to follow who was in what position, but, Chareyre led the pack into turn one with Van Den Bosch leaning on him.
In the S1 class Van Den Bosch got into a lead, never really to be challenged again with Lazzarini coming round at the end of the lap in second, a position he would hold till the end of the race.
Meanwhile, the best UK chance of a podium was with Winstanley, and at the halfway stage he was holding a comfortable third. However on lap 11 out of 20, he coasted to a stop as his bike gave up. At the flag Van Den Bosch took the win from Lazzerini with South African Craig Venske
finishing an excellent third.
James Addy was sixth while Chris Hodgson and Winstanley where credited with 11th and 12th, although they didn't complete the whole race distance.
In the S2 class, Chareyre was just stretching out more and more of a lead over the rest of his class to eventually take the win by over 16 seconds.
Davide Gozzini from Italy had gated second and held that position until the end of the race with fellow Italian Edgardo Borella chasing him over the finish.
Iddon, in fourth, was caught and passed by Gerald Delepine and Lorenzo Mariani as his recent injuries began to take their toll on his results.
Just over an hour later the riders were on the line ready to do it all again, but after a warm-up lap the riders had decided that the first off-road section was over-watered and would be dangerous on the opening lap.
Ten minutes later, after the off-road section had been sorted and the field of riders slid into turn one, Chareyre was in the lead once again, but as the pack disappeared up the hill to the hairpin Iddon and Luca Minutilli were down and injured. Minutilli was taken away with suspected back injuries, while Iddon damaged his hand again.
At the re-start of the S1's, it was Lazzarini from Mauno Hermunen and Van Den Bosch with Addy sixth and Hodgson ninth. Winstanley was in trouble again as he cruised round turn one and back to the paddock with more bike troubles.
Van Den Bosch was in second place by the end of lap two but couldn't close in on the leader Lazzarini, so he settled for second in the race and overall. Hermunen hung onto third with Venske having another good ride in fourth place and Hodgson and Addy seventh and eighth places.
In the S2 class, once again Chareyre led from start to finish, with Gozzini passing Delepine for second place on lap six as Mariani came up from a bad start to take fourth place at the finish flag.
