Phil fills top spot
By TMX Archives on 6th Sep 07
FOLLOWING his great Bank Holiday Monday win at Wymeswold, Phil Mercer travelled to Cleobury Mortimer on Sunday with a 13-point advantage over reigning AMCA 125cc champ Brad O'Leary.
With the 2007 title race now approaching its final stages, Philproduced another masterclass performance to further extend that lead toa massive 41points by earning a very important overall victory.
Now holding second place in the series is Lee Payne, recording hisfourth consecutive podium placing while O'Leary drops back to thirdfollowing what could well prove to be a championship deciding DNF inmoto two.
Impressive at Wymeswold the previous week, Matt Porter recorded anotherstrong performance to eventually earn a richly deserved runner-up placeon the
podium.
While home-club rider Jamie Dobson produced his own most impressiveshowing of the championship season so far to take fourth overall, thestar performer must have been Mark Hooley in fifth spot. During earlymorning qualifying, Mark suffered a massive crash which totally wreckedthe front end of his KTM. With no spare machine available, Mark'smeeting could well have been over but thanks to the incrediblegenerosity of fellow competitors with the offer of another bike orreplacement parts, he was able to rebuild his damaged mount.
Suffering from tremendous pain from injured ribs and hip, Mark was thenbarely able to climb aboard his bike but still remarkably completed allthree motos. Give that man an award for outstanding bravery!
Just as at Wymeswold, Porter made the fastest start in moto one andthen developed a healthy lead. Giving chase in this first clash wereDobson, Mercer, the incredible Hooley, Owen Delaney, O'Leary, Payne andNixon.
While Mercer was fighting hard to find a way past Dobson, Porter wasright on the gas and continuing to fabricate an impressive ad-vantageat the front.
When Mercer did eventually move on up into second, he remarkably reeledin runaway leader Porter before making a super pass stick on the finallap.
