On Saturday, February 6, Nene Valley MCC ran the opening round of the Normandale Traditional Trials Championship – the Putoline Cup Trial – for age related classes.
The event was the first day of a double-header weekend, with the Castle Colchester club hosting round two on Sunday at Pebmarsh, near Halstead.
Over 90 riders turned up to a wet and windy Cranford Firs, and they set off on a course of approximately 13-miles of Northamptonshire countryside between Thrapston and Kettering.
The course took a lot of marks off some competitors, with the Woodford sections seeming to catch most riders out.
The star man of the day was Ian Wakeford riding the Over 50 Class on the 50/50 course.
Ian's first lap cost him only five dabs.
A few more went on the second lap but he finished with a total of 21 marks, by far and away the best ride of the day.
David Clinkard took first place in the Over 40 Class with a loss of 38 marks.
In the Over 60 category Stephen Farrall racked up a score of 66 marks, still, that was good enough to claim the class win by 11 marks over Michael Flanagan.
The club would like to thank the landowners, and the observers for sterling work in such dreadful weather conditions.

Castle Colchester MCC
Almost 100 competitors headed east to the picturesque village of Pebmarsh half-way between Colchester and Halstead for the Phil King East Anglian National organised by Castle Colchester MCC.
Once again this was the second round the revamped ACU Masters Traditional Trials Championship with competitors facing a single lap of 37 sections over a 15-mile lap with plenty of field crossings. The weather on the day was perfect with some bright sunshine and a chilly wind.
The non-championship Twin-shocks and Pre 65 classes headed off first followed by the Over 60-year-old competitors with the first group of sections just down the road at Cross Ends, where there were four sections on the grassy, rooted banks, that remained greasy all day.
Graham Haslam who ultimately was second in Class 2 (Over 50) lost his first mark of the day with a prod on section four, while Ian Wakeford stayed clean until section five, at the Gallops.
These two riders remained neck and neck all day until Colne Park where Ian eked out a small advantage to take the top spot.
Phil Martin saw his chances of a win literally slip away at Colne Park, where as usual there was very little grip to be had.
Popular
A five-mark loss at section 31 where Tim Blackmore had a fantastic clean on his little Fantic meant Martin's his score rocketed and was closely followed by three more losses at section 32 resulting in third place overall.
A ten-minute ride along the narrow lanes took the riders to Alphamstone Pit where 14 sections proved popular with spectators.
This was the biggest group of the day with a variety of steep rooted climbs, a bit of mud and the Eastern Centre favourite – sand.
Over 60 winner Steven Farral was exceptional here, loosing just two-dabs, an advantage that he held to the end of the event.
He claimed taking the class win ahead of Michael Flanagan.
Both of these riders used their heads and avoided any fives to run clear of third placed man, Kevin Stannard
Class 1 is the ultra-competitive Over 40s, who ride the slightly harder of the two routes and it produced a tie on just eight-marks between Dave Clinkard and Gavin Cooper.
Once again it was Colne park that sorted these two old adversaries out. In third place Chris Koch will regret a shaky finish at the steep climbs at the final group of sections – Overhall – where the steep root strewn climbs were extremely slippery late in the day.
Last class away were the modern non-championship riders where Jack Sheppard familiarised himself with the grip levels on his newly acquired Beta and managed to complete the whole trial without losing any marks and securing his first UK National win of the year.
