Report: Severn Valley/Warley Wasps
By TMX Archives on 7th May 14
Blessed with some great scrambling weather Severn Valley SSC and Warley Wasps held a joint meeting at Upton Court with the hilly grassland circuit in tip top condition ready for the large number of eager riders from Auto to Veteran.
Six blocks of racing were crammed in and, despite a visit from the air ambulance, in the main all races ran smoothly.
The Autos kicked off both days and it was Severn Valley's Zach Dunton who took a maximum six our of six wins, completely dominating all his races, even taking time to fall, re-mount and still continue to complete the lap.
Ollie Wheeler achieved second overall, managing four runner-up spots after a fall in moto one had him playing catch up, handing second race spot to Jack Viner.
Roan Delany secured third overall having had to move up through from mediocre starts, with Jake Randell only five points behind and could have been challenging for runner-up had he not had so many slip-ups.
The Juniors' racing could have gone one of four ways with the track heavily watered on Monday to stop any chance of dust. Bryn Brookes seemed to excel, but it was Charlie Palmer's day, launching off the big downhill ski jump in a manner many of the adults could only dream of and his consistent scoring over both days put him on the top step, racking up three wins en route. Billy Duke managed wins in the opening and final race to take second overall with Hedley Longford's steady riding gaving him a podium step.
Small-wheels had three riders head and shoulders above the rest, Dominic Lancett, James Hanscomb and Luke Woodhouse with lap times five seconds a lap quicker than the rest and were soon in a different race to the others.
Lancett took all the wins with the other two trading podium steps but it was Hanscomb's four seconds to Woodhouse's two seconds that gave him overall second. Not even Severn Valley's SW hotshot Jayden Murphy could make an impression on this trio after joining the action on Monday.
Big-wheel action was fast, furious and hard to call. Oliver Consterdine dropped himself out of overall contention in race one when he went missing three laps in while battling hard at the front, but Jordan Riley wasn't to be denied. But for one race it would have been a clean sweep for Riley, and that one went to Brooklyn Evans with Consterdine second.
James Bates kept up a high scoring points card to come home for third overall and Nathan Bache lost out to Mitch Evans after falling on the first lap of moto five.
Two separate riders shared the wins in the Seniors as Jake Ford stole the limelight on Sunday with a clean sweep but in the slippery conditions of Monday didn't fare as well, with Kieron Cooke fighting hard to put his 125 in front of the 250Fs.
Ford spent too much time on the floor on Monday to hand Cooke the overall. Dan Wheeler tried to capitalise on the opportunity and achieved two more second spots to add to one from Sunday but not quite enough to overhaul Ford for the second overall.
The Veterans was shaken up a lot by several top scoring riders only competing on one out of the two days. The first two races went to Shaun Sabin, but he was pushed by brothers Justin and Scott Senter. Justin took the third race with Sabin a non starter.
However, none of these three took part on Monday and all three races on the second day went to three different riders creating some interesting racing.
Overall went to Jamie Grindle taking one win, John Evans winning the last race but Grindle's better first day put him clear in the overall stakes, Matt Evans came through with a worst result of sixth to take third overall.
The Novice adults class was as popular as ever and filled the gate. With no fewer than four different moto winners the overall went right down to the final race and only six points separated the top four who all achieved race wins.
Ryan Thomas came out victorious over Joel Curtis, whose starts cost him the overall. Kyle Proctor's final two race wins pulled him up into third overall.
The Open adults was at a rapid pace with Chase Neale only competing one day and taking two wins but he didn't factor overall. It was, howver, Andrew Gillett and Robert Lewis rubbing plastics until, on day two, a stone damaged Lewis's radiator and he had nurse his machine to salvage points. Ryan James improved over the weekend just nicking third overall from Daniel Wilcox.
It was a close affair in AMX with eight points covering the top three,
A fall mid-way into the fourth race cost Dan Jagielski the overall and Karl Haycock was right there to pick up the win. Lee Truman continued his recent form to battle hard for three third placings and the third overall.
