Richard's Branston loot
By Mike Wood on 5th Aug 11
While 'wild-card' entrant Richard Cannings took another great IMBA MX1 overall win at Branston, fellow Brits Lee Dunham (third) and Clinton Barrs (fifth) both produced superb performances to keep themselves well and truly in contention for that 2011 title. Continuing his recent fine up-turn in form, Shaun Pearce was the pick of the other Brits at Branston, earning a very impressive seventh overall while Richard Meakin was 12th.
For the remaining two Team GB members though, Sunday's event proved a very painful experience as Chris Neesam retired after hurting his back in moto one and Brad O'Leary suffered a broken scaphoid and injured elbow following a horrific moto two crash.
Sunday's event also featured round five of the highly entertaining AMCA MX2 Championship, and just like the previous week, Sean Frayne, Jack Taylor and Shane Holmes all bagged a moto win apiece.
Series leader, Holmes, recorded his victory in the final clash of the day, which produced without doubt the best MX2 battle of the season so far, an absolute classic! In the Championship standings, Taylor has moved into third ahead of Paul Neale who still raced at Branston despite suffering from a severe sickness bug.
Round three of the IMBA MX1 Championship opened proceedings, and despite the very best efforts of the organising Burntwood Barracudas Club, recent weather dictated that the going was always going to be hard, dry, slick and in certain areas, dusty.
So, for a racer the best pace to be was out in front, to ensure clear vision and that's just what Brit Lee Dunham achieved as he grabbed the moto one holeshot with team-mate Clinton Barrs in tow.
However, by the end of lap one, series leader Frank Jansen-Teitz had already passed Barrs. Despite having the last choice of start position, Richard Cannings was already up into seventh, one spot behind Brad O'Leary, while Shaun Pearce held ninth and Chris Neesam 11th. Not enjoying a good start was Richard Meakin, who fell in turn one with Belgian Vince Collet.
Up-front Dunham was in great form, styling his way to an eventual victory, finishing over seven-seconds in front of reigning IMBA Champion Jansen-Teitz, with Barrs a great third.
Having posted a rapidly qualification time, Collet was the other star of the moto, blasting from last to pass Cannings for fourth on the final lap and he almost caught Barrs!
O'Leary eventually got home in eighth, one place ahead of Pearce, while Meakin recovered back to 16th. Neesam was forced out with his back injury after three-laps.
O'Leary grabbed the moto two holeshot only to suffer a frightening downhill crash with both rider and machine cartwheeling down the track. He took no further part in the event.
Belgian Jelle Grade took over at the front, with Cannings in second, Collet third, Barrs fourth and Jansen-Teitz fifth. Dunham held seventh, Pearce ninth and Meakin 17th.
Quickly the super fast Collet ousted Cannings to briefly make it a Belgian one-two before he crashed out and injured his knee. While stylish Grade galloped to victory, the next three positions were filled by Brits – Cannings, Barrs and Dunham, who had made a determined effort to move up and make a pass stick on Jansen-Teitz.
In the race to the flag, Dutchman Vince Reichers also got the better of German Jansen-Teitz, while Pearce finished a fine ninth and Meakin 11th.
Dunham again grabbed the final IMBA MX1 holeshot although by the end of the lap, team-mate Cannings was in control with Barrs holding fifth, Pearce eighth and Meakin 12th. Eventually both Jansen-Teitz and Grade pushed Dunham backwards.
Critically,on the final lap, Grade passed Jansen-Teitz as Cannings remained composed to take the moto win and also ensure the overall verdict. After his fine start Dunham got home fourth to bag another vital 47-championship points, ahead of Barrs.
Just a little further down the leader-board, Pearce and Meakin were indulging in their own private battle for tenth spot – the verdict going to Pearce.
In the title race, the action now moves onto Jansen-Teitz's home circuit of Ohlenberg, Germany, and he holds a very narrow four-point advantage over Dunham, with Barrs just a further three-points adrift. Come on you Brits!
