Motocross

The penultimate round of this years Maxxis British Motocross Championship visited the first man-made circuit this year at the Silverstone race track in Northants.

The ACU Events team moved in a few weeks ago to totally revamp the track in preparation for this event and could never have forecast the amount of rain that came down the week before the meeting.

It could have been a disaster, but the team worked 16-hour days to get the circuit ready and were still working on it on the morning of the event, taking a total of over 100,000 gallons of water from the track and also scraping the wet layer off the top surface to enable the meeting to go ahead.  Congratulations must go to all the track staff and the ACU, as what was witnessed were some excellent races in the MX1 and MX2 classes, along with the youngsters in the MXY2 championship.

Connor Walkley took the British MXY2 Champion title but had to work really hard to get it. In the MX1 class it was yet another battle, as all the hype that Bobryshev would be missing was not found has he turned up and raced to the surprise of everyone. Stephen Sword continued his assault and took his second overall win on the bounce, to go with the Farleigh overall. In MX2, Zach Osborne and Jake Nicholls were fighting yet again and it was Osborne who excelled again. Both these classes are still undecided and will go down to the last round at Hawkstone Park to decide who will be champion for 2010.

Along with all the regulars at Silverstone the Swedish pairing of the Pulse/ One 28 Swedish Honda team Max Nyberg and Jonas Algotsson where over to get some practice by riding the British Championship. Also noted in the paddock were the rider changes at Samsung Yamaha as Wayne Smith as rejoined the team to the end of the season and beyond, depending on whether Ben Lamay returns to the UK. DBR Honda also had a new rider present in Lewis Rose.

With the track rutting up and getting more technical as the day went on, the first of two races for the young guns went to the line, with Connor Walkley heading the points race coming into this round ahead of Matt Bayliss all Walkley had to do to take the title was to win the race.

However, wild cards Joe Jones and Jesse Wentland gave him a hard fight along with all the regulars.

Walkley made it simple for himself by taking the lead and going on to take a start to finish win.

Jones, normally an Enduro rider, was out to try motocross and put pressure on Walkley from the start but he was headed by Matt Burrows on lap seven for second place.
Jones then came under pressure from Luke Norris and Matt Bayliss but held on to take third place with Norris and Bayliss settling for fourth and fifth.

In race two Wentland moved into the lead after passing Gary Sharp on lap two annd went on to win the race.

Walkley had a bad start and was down in eighth place on lap one, but determinedly fought his way up to third spot.

Jones took fourth with Bayliss just getting fifth from Norris who settled for sixth. Walkley took the overall with Jones and Burrows joining him on the podium in second and third.
