Take a look: Robert Smith’s 1981 490 Maico
By TMX Contributor on 18th Jul 18
This superb-looking iconic vintage dirt bike belongs to Scottish racer Robert Smith.
Robert completely rebuilt this 1981490 Maico over the course of the winter of 2017/18 when he was laid up with an injury after a racing event.
"I was at a loose end and the old girl was in need of a little TLC as she had been through the wars on the track for a good few years," said Robert.
"So when I was fit enough to get into the workshop I stripped her down to the bare frame and replaced and/or renewed almost every part.
"It was really good therapy for me and my rehabilitation as it kept me interested in the Twin-shock racing scene by doing all the refurbishment and
maintenance and watching it all come together.
"Shes not had her rebaptism on the track as yet although it will most certainly get a blast in the next few weeks when I visit a local vintage club event."
