The book of Eli

It was a night of firsts at Chase Field, Phoenix, last Saturday, with Eli Tomac racing to his debut 450 AMA SX win while in the West Region 250cc class Cooper Webb stood on top of the podium for the first time.
As the gate dropped on the 450 Main Event Geico Honda's Tomac yanked the holeshot but Ken Roczen took the lead in a left-hander on the opening lap.
A repeat of Anaheim's opening round seven days before, when the RCH Suzuki rider immediately checked out, looked on the cards but Tomac kept the German in his sights.
As the leading pair began to pull away Red Bull KTM's former champ Ryan Dungey was pushed back to fourth by Weston Peick, as his JGR Yamaha team-mate Justin Barcia completed the opening lap in 22nd after a shocking start.
Ex-pat Brit Dean Wilson was running sixth in the early stages, while a few places behind Chad Reed and Justin Brayton were engaged in a super-physical battle and Trey Canard was further back but carving his way through the field.
