TMX SAYS: Life’s a show!

Motocross

If you needed a reminder that off-road motorcycle sport is the best thing since sliced bread then our tarmac terrorising cousins those in F1 and MotoGP circles especially offered plenty up at the weekend by being totally and utterly lame by comparison.

Apparently the most exciting that that happened at the F1 series finale was Nico Rosberg throwing his cap at team-mate Lewis Hamilton after the race had ended – ooh, get her...
Meanwhile in Sepang what could have been described as an ace tear-up ended in disappointment when series promoters Dorna went a little OTT with their punishment of Valentino Rossi after he clashed with Marc Marquez.
There's no denying that Rossi took Marquez wide deliberately and he definitely crashed as a result but in the grand scheme of things that move was a million times less dangerous than what the Spaniard had already pulled on Rossi.
In my mind Marc deserved to be put on his backside and since Valentino facilitated that in the safest way possible then it's all good.
Now I'm not condoning dangerous riding in any shape or form but I also believe that you reap what you sow and Marquez had messed with the champ for more than long enough. It was a racing incident settled on the track with no long-term damage done. Get over it guys...
If similar sanctions for similar actions are ever imposed on the off-road elite then I'll be totally ticked off as hard racing and tough passes are all part of the game.
Bang
To take things a step further I'd love to see how the Dorna chiefs would go about officiating a Speedway GP because those boys bang bars, rub each other up the wrong way, take each other out and then throw some fists in the pits afterwards and nobody blinks an eye. Good work shale shifting brethren...
But enough about all that – let's get back on track and concentrate what's happening in the off-road world. By the time you read this the International Dirt Bike Show will be in full swing which – like getting on the wrong side of Valentino Rossi – can be a bit dangerous.
While off-road riders run the risk of getting wanged wrists, shafted shoulder and knackered knees there's something lurking at the show that's a million times more dangerous. I'm talking about ‘show breath'.
Now, I'm not a scientist but I'm figuring there's some kind of formula – involving hangovers, coffee, talking lots and breathing in dry air – that plays havoc with show-folk's mouths and leaves them rather rancid.
What I have noticed over the years is that the old pros at the show game will always carry a packet of gum or mints with them so if someone offers you a Polo or some Wrigley's then please don't be offended but do take the hint.
I'm obviously gonna be at the International Dirt Bike Show – with some of the team – so if you get chance pop over and say hi. And if you do then please remember to bring me a mint because I'll most likely need it...
