Top of the Docks

Former British championship contender Ray Rowson ripped to a hat-trick of MX1 wins on Sunday as the Scott Amateur Nationals pitched up at Preston Docks for round two.

A last-minute wildcard entry, Rowson wasn't eligible to score points so while he set the pace at the front the serious business was taking place just behind him where James Lassu, Alex Rach and Rob Clitheroe were engaged in a three-way title fight.

It was Rach, screaming the nuts off his two-stroke TM, who drew first blood to come home ahead of series leader Lassu and Clitheroe in the opener.

But a race two DNF after a heavy crash followed by a race three DNS dumped him down the order.

With Rach out of contention the stage was set for a head-to-head showdown and Clitheroe took full advantage of home turf to edge the Yorkshireman out in races two and three.

Cory Nemeth stayed solid all day for third overall as heavy rain and at times gale force winds combined to make conditions super-tough.

In the championship Lassu stretched his lead to eight points from Clitheroe as Rach slipped back to fifth in the standings.

Another local hero – this time Matt Callaghan – dominated the Craigs Motorcycles-supported MX2 class by smashing out a three-race maximum.

As the track got seriously rough over the course of the day the 18-year-old from Bolton picked some great lines and was never really threatened.
